As part of Le French May when Francophone culture is celebrated all over Hong Kong, Virtually Versailles presents the nation’s heritage in the form of an interactive tour of the Palace of Versailles. Whizzing you over to the spectacular château built by Louis XIV west of Paris, this magical experience is a visual journey across time, exploring the palace garden, the splendidly baroque Hall of Mirrors, and even catching a glimpse of Queen Marie Antoinette’s bedroom from three centuries ago.

It is universally agreed that of the four seasons, Spring is a particularly beautiful time given all the flowers burst into vibrant bloom. Bringing such beauty to light is the Fete des Fleurs, a project instigated by the Sham Shui Po district office that first blossomed in March. A Fairytale Floral route and related activities have showcased a wide variety of flowers, including chrysanthemums, cherry blossoms, kapok, bougainvillaea and tulip. This month, city dwellers can look forward to even more colour from the likes of hydrangea and bauhinia.

Composed by Giuseppe Verdi in 1853, Il Trovatore is adored by opera aficionados and appreciated by critics for its complex, moving and melancholic plot. Opera Hong Kong rises to the task of portraying tragic elements like child sacrifice and fatal curses in this classic work from an Italian libretto by Salvadore Cammarano. While the four acts are staged in the original language, English and Chinese surtitles allow full immersion in the performance for non-Italian speakers.

At one point or another, especially after a few too many pints, many of us have had the experience of tweeting something we’d later regret. Except, in most occasions, it doesn’t result in a billion-dollar lawsuit. The same can’t be said about Tesla CEO Elon Musk however.
After months of buzz around Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s claims to buy Twitter, the quirky SpaceX founder has finally declared that he will not be pursuing ownership of Twitter after attempting to terminate a signed merger agreement in April. As a result, Twitter has sued the business magnate for backing out of a US$44 billion acquisition.
Sniping back at the social media platform, Musk has accused the company of misleading him with inaccurate data, obfuscating facts, not notifying him of layoffs and executive changes, as well as refusing to hand over “useable” user data – all of which allegedly constitute a “breach” of the agreement, according to Musk’s lawyers. As the case goes on, if found liable, Musk will be obliged to pay a US$1 billion break-up fee according to the agreement.

Money, muscles and bagels. Hong Kong is known to be one of the safest cities in the world, with murder and theft cases being comparatively lower than other cities. However, a recent scuffle between two establishments has turned sour and you bet social media was quick to catch on.&nbsp;
In June, the infamous Bagel War was the talk of Kennedy Town and almost every English media in the city. Mendel’s, a New York bagel shop went viral on social media for a video they posted to their Instagram page in which men in black shirts were seen blocking entry to the store and telling customers that they were not allowed in, while employees can be heard yelling from inside to customers that the deli was in fact open.
The establishment had accused rival Schragel’s founder Rebecca Schragel of having hired security to harass customers and employees. In the video, customers can be seen struggling to pass through – dodging and pushing their way past the burly men. While many customers and supporters of the eatery were enraged, some found amusement in the turn of events.
It was cleared that Rebecca Schrage, a majority shareholder of Mendel’s was suing her partners for financial disputes.
<h4>It&#8217;s Not Over Until It&#8217;s Over</h4>

Nobody wants to be broken up with on text or over the phone. However, that didn’t stop the head of state of Sri Lanka to pack up and flee the country in the wake of anti-government protests in July.
It was confirmed By Mahinda Yapa Abeywardenena, the Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, that Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had sent over his resignation through e-mail and fled to Singapore on a flight from the Maldives.
Abeywardenena has told media that “we cannot accept such an email at face value” and that the legality of such a declaration needs to be legally verified, ascertained and officially confirmed. The state is expecting a paper copy of the letter but is expecting the letter to come through at a later time as it would be sent from Singapore.

When you think of Turkey, what springs to mind? If you say a large gobbling bird, you’re not alone. Most of us have all been guilty of associating “Turkey” with the thanksgiving dinner table rather than paying any mind to the actual country. In fact, if you type it into Google, you’re quite likely to see pages worth of the large game bird.
As such, the government of Turkey had formally advocated to officially change the country’s name to Türkiye (pronounced tur-key-yay), even producing a video commercial of the movement. It doesn’t help that the word is also alternatively defined as “a stupid or inept person”.
The name was changed to reframe the country’s image and connect it to its cultural roots. The process of the country’s renaming had began in December 2021 when President Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued a statement saying, “The word ‘Turkiye’ represents and expresses the culture, civilisation, and values of the Turkish nation in the best way.” In June, The United Nations officially recognised Turkey as Türkiye and had implemented the change shortly after receipt of the request.

Contrary to high end jeweller Tiffany &amp; Co.’s tagline: Behind every dream is a dreamer, a recent legal battle between the high-end brand and competitor Cartier has pit the two luxury brands against each other.
In march Cartier accused Tiffany &amp; Co. of stealing trade secrets of the brand’s bespoke jewellery collection. According to a complaint filed in a New York state court in Manhattan, Tiffany had hired an under qualified junior manager to learn more about Cartier’s High Jewelry collection, in which pieces cost from US$50,000 to US$10 million.
The manager also happened to be a former executive worker for Cartier and was hired despite her six-month non-compete agreement. She was then fired after five weeks. Tiffany had since denied all allegations Cartier has made thus far. Although this isn’t the first legal battle between the two, it’s still a saucy affair to see two major league brands go head to head.&nbsp;
<h4>Metabirkins? Nadabirkins!</h4>

As vague as the lines are between reality and the metaverse, to luxury conglomerate Hermès, the boundaries of copyright is clear.
In January, Hermès sent artist Mason Rothschild a cease and desist letter and filed a lawsuit in federal court in the Southern District of New York for alleged trademark infringement, false designation of origin, trademark dilution, and cyber-squatting.
This lawsuit followed a sale by the artist of reinterpreted Berkin NFTs, coined the word “Metabirkins”, within the metaverse. The NFT features furry renderings of Hermes’s iconic Birkin handbag.&nbsp;Artist Mason Rothschild has since claimed his First Amendment right and right to artistic expression, stating that the Metabirkins are not explicitly misleading.

Celebrating the year’s most hilarious quips, anecdotes and happenstances

Hong Kong’s lifestyle expert in designer furniture, lighting and décor Andante invites visitors into its newly renovated a total of 600 sq.m showrooms on Duddell&#8217;s Street to showcase its exclusive art pieces and the full Minotti Collection.
The world of design and art are often married together as inseparable entities — both evoking emotions and visual narrative in philosophy and practice. Recognising this dynamic, Andante has in recent years begun bringing these two worlds together. This May, it has curated a collection of art pieces by five collaborative Italian contemporary artists to be featured in this art month alongside the full collection from Italian luxury furniture brand Minotti.

Another example is São Paulo-based Marcio Kogan/ studio mk27’s Brasilia collection. The relationship with the brand and designer debuted in 2018 with the studio’s Quadrado outdoor modular seating system and continued in 2019 through to 2021 with the present Brasilia seating system.

Drawing from simplicity and Brazilian modernism, while also demonstrating a meticulous attention to details and finishing, the sofas within the collection boasts a use of premium materials to ensure the utmost comfort and sophistication for any living space.
Built into square frames and enclosed in Dark Brown stained palisander Santos that were sourced from responsibly managed forests, the sofas are then assembled with plush padding and cushions that sit on polished Brandy finish metallic legs that give the design a warm, natural and elegant aesthetic.

Another highlight within the brand&#8217;s 2021Collection comes from award-winning designer GamFratesi, founded by Danish architect Stine Gam and Italian architect Enrico Fratesi. Combining their expertise of furniture design and industrial design, the duo’s designs take their creative drive from reinviting tradition through experimental approaches with materials and techniques. It is this very combination that led to their debut in the Minotti&#8217;s2019 Collection, serving as the catalyst for future collaborations, including their inclusion in the brand’s 2021 Outdoor Collection in which the designer’s Patio and Lido “Cord” seating system and outdoor sofas were included.

Drawing on classic Danish designs and traditional Italian approach, the series presents a highly versatile modularity and a use of mixing different materials that evoke an eclectic and contemporary style through mosaic, geometric, and bergère designs. Even such unique design features as a handy tray in stained solid mahogany or natural teak set with grooves for draining water demonstrates the level of creativity and craftsmanship the designer executes with every design.

While Andante has long established itself as a leading destination for all thingsmodern classic designs for interior decoration, the showroom goes beyond furniture. Continuing its endeavour in the art world, the newly revamped showroom remains as a double entendre for showcasing Italian designs, as well as artistic creations.

The curation of this body of work will include new art pieces by recurring artist Matteo Negri as well as two new collaborative artists, Eugenio Filippi and Paolo De Stefani. The pieces, along with previously showcased works by Federico Casati and Alessio Ceruti, will stage the venue&#8217;s five newly refurbished main areas. Here, art meets lifestyle and transforms creates a space of creative flair.

The venue was transformed into a space that took the form of an English club, a true embodiment of the theme that reflects the classic elegance of masculinity. To set the tone of the evening, with breathtaking panoramic views of the bay of Cannes in the backdrop, pop-soul band Kimberose enlivened the room with a selection of their top hits such as Back on My Feet, Escape and Sober.

The occasion welcomed actors, socialites and individuals renowned for their exquisite style. Besides the attendance of Scheufele friends and family, the presence of the likes of legendary race drivers and official Chopard Ambassadors Jacky Ickx and Romain Dumas, as well as UFC champion Conor McGregor were added to the celebratory air and personified the type of gentlemen for whom Chopard timepieces are intended.

To further elevate the event with a well-rounded sensorial experience, a French gastronomic affair was served to guests in attendance that evening, courtesy of Executive chefs Arnaud Faye of La Chèvre d&#8217;Or restaurant (Meilleur Ouvrier de France) and Christian Sinicropi of La Palme d’Or restaurant.
The dishes — an exquisite fare — were accompanied by Monestier Latour wines (from Karl-Friedrich Scheufele&#8217;s vineyard in Bergerac) and Perrier-Jouët “Blanc de blancs” champagne, as well as cigars and handcrafted cocktails prepared by Campari.

23-year-old swimmer Siobhan Haughey is continuing with her magical form at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics &#8211; she has sealed a second silver for the city in the women&#8217;s 100m freestyle final on Friday morning. Haughey touched the wall in a sensational lap of 52.27 seconds, marginally beaten by Australia&#8217;s Emma McKeon who finished at 51:96.
The latest win, brings Hong Kong&#8217;s medal tally to three, after Edgar Cheung&#8217;s gold in men&#8217;s individual fencing event. That&#8217;s the best performance the city has ever had at the&nbsp;Olympics -surreal, to say the least.&nbsp;
The Games were a year delayed, over US$20 billion spent — nearly triple the original budget, taking place under the constant threat of cancellations in the midst of a fourth COVID-19 emergency in Tokyo, hot and muggy weather, eerily quiet stadiums – it&#8217;s an Olympic like none other in modern history. Yet, Hong Kong&#8217;s &#8216;insane&#8217; run at the Games (as described by gold medalist&nbsp;Edgar Cheung Ka-long), has been nothing short of spectacular.

A mermaid of sorts, she began her swim training at the age of 4&nbsp;at the South China Athletic Association. Early on, her coaches recognized she was &#8220;gifted in swimming&#8221; and convinced her to keep up with the training. After making waves at the local and international swimming events, Haughey fell passionately in love with the sport.&nbsp;

A regular day for the Olympic sensation would start with waking up at 3am for studies, 5am for swim practice, then a full day at school followed by piano practice after &#8211; repeat that for six days a week. The grind ensured she achieved the highest level in piano, got excellent grades in school, cruised through a University of Michigan Psychology under-grad and smashed through several swimming accolades &#8211;&nbsp;63 local and 13 Asian records, to be precise.&nbsp;

The city&#8217;s first Olympic gold in 25 years obviously sent the home crowds into rapture.&nbsp;Hong Kong fencer Edgar Cheung Ka-long, the world No 19, accomplished the unbelievable feat. He beat the reigning gold medalist of the 2016 Rio Olympics — 28-year-old Daniele Garozzo from Italy by 15–11. And before this historic golden moment, he shook the world by defeating current World No 1 foil fencer –&nbsp;Alessio Foconi from Italy – in the table of 16 match.&nbsp;

No better way to describe the frenzy which enveloped the city after Cheung&#8217;s historic breakthrough and strong attack against the Italian gold medalist. The match did get close in the final rounds but not even for a moment did Cheung allow the title to slip away. His victory not only marks the first gold for the HKSAR in 25 years, after windsurfer Lee Lai-shan&#8217;s 1996 success, but also the fourth medal for the city in the history of Olympics.
The HK government is rewarding Cheung with five million Hong Kong dollars for the sporting glory.&nbsp;

Like with any sports megastar, the journey to the top was a result of years of dedication, focus and hard work. His awe-inspiring journey started in fencing schools and trainings at the age of 10 &#8211; he showed incredible promise right from the beginning accumulating sporting accolades instead of Marvel collectibles like the other children his age. He was named the&nbsp;&#8220;Most Promising Young Athlete&#8221; for Hong Kong at the&nbsp;Samsung Hong Kong Sports Star Awards Ceremony in 2013,&nbsp;“Outstanding Junior Athlete” by the Hong Kong Sports Institute in 2014 and ultimately exploded on the fencing scene with&nbsp;the Asian champion crown in 2016 at the Wuxi Asian Fencing Championships at just&nbsp;18-years-old &#8211; the first Hong Konger to earn that coveted spot.&nbsp;

Within a week of the 2020 Olympics, Haughey&#8217;s double silver and fencer Cheung Ka-long&#8217;s men&#8217;s individual foil gold means that Tokyo is already Hong Kong&#8217;s most successful Olympics ever. How to get to Cheung Chau 
Taking a trip to Cheung Chau is the perfect excuse to take your sailboat or yacht out into&nbsp;sea, but if without, fret not because hopping on the ferry from Central Ferry&nbsp;Pier No. 5 is just as easy. There are two ferries available at the pier: the fast ferry will get you to the island in around 35 minutes, while the&nbsp; journey on the ordinary ferry can take up to an hour. Just remember to get to the pier early as it gets crowded on public holidays.
Check out local art at Valor 
If the sunshine and island vibes of Cheung Chau isn&#8217;t enough to start your morning off on a bright note, a quick stop for coffee would likely get you going. Valor is a cafe that doubles as an art hub where it serves&nbsp; a special coconut ice-dripped and features a rotation of artworks by local artists and photographers.
Take Instagram-worthy photos on the way to the beach 
Take a stroll along the beautiful coastline of the island on the paved trail the North Pavilion where a panoramic view of the South China Sea offers a refreshing perspective of Hong Kong. There are also several Instagram-worthy pit stops worth making on the way, from natural rock formations to the 18th Century Cheung Po Tsai Cave. For a less trafficked path, the trail to the Mini Great Wall is an easy family-friendly alternative that leads to the&nbsp;less crowded Kwun Yam Beach where the&nbsp;seven-decade-strong local Hing Kee bar serves fresh mocktails and cold beers by the&nbsp;shore.
Snack on local delicacies 
Exploring the many backstreets of the island is any foodie&#8217;s adventure where almost everything can be found from Western diners to local desert shops, but the highlight of a trip to the Cheung Chau is snacking on the slew of street food and delicacies unique to the island, from giant fish balls and potato&nbsp;swirls to refreshing frozen fruits and grilled squid.
For a departure meal, a visit to Cheung Chau cannot be complete without a Canton-style seafood feast by the seaside where every eatery lined along the harbour front offer a range of fresh seafood options, from razor clams to mantis shrimp, whole crabs and seasonal fish.
Visit traditional Chinese temples 
There are several temples in Cheung Chau that date back centuries and are frequently visited by locals. The Pak Tai Temple, in particular, was built in 1783&nbsp; to honour of the Taoist God of the Sea. Distinguisibale by its dragon-guarded ceramic roof, the temple houses several Qing (1644–1911) and Song (960–1279)&nbsp;dynasty artefacts and is the dedicated venue for the annual Bun Scrambling event on&nbsp;the day of the spirited Bun Festival.
