Karen Mok: The Ultimate Grand Slam Show

Iconic Hong Kong pop singer Karen Mok bids farewell to performing on stage and moves on to the next chapter of her life in the final stint of her three-year tour to 40 cities worldwide. Held over three nights within the Hong Kong Coliseum in Kowloon, her last large-scale concert serves as the star’s last hurrah in her decade-long career in the showbiz industry. Though it remains uncertain whether the artist will be retiring from performing completely, it is definite that this concert would be the last of its kind for the megastar and is surely a historic event that is not to be missed.

Music After Work @ Xiqu Centre

Hi! Flora, Fauna

One of the oldest zoological and botanical centres in the world, and the city’s oldest park, the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens provides the lush backdrop for an art project that exhorts visitors to explore their relationship with nature. ‘Hi! Flora, Fauna’ exhibits 17 different artists and groups using various media, including painting, photography, sculpting and installation. The experience is further enlivened with a collaborative audio experience by Hong Kong New Music Ensemble.

Calligraphy Rhapsody:&nbsp;Retrospective Exhibition of Georges Mathieu

Co-presented by non-profit organisation K11 Art Foundation (KAF) and the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong &amp; Macau at K11 MUSEA. Calligraphy Rhapsody is the largest Georges Mathieu exhibition in Hong Kong&nbsp; that marks the French artist’s centenary. Curated by Catherine Kwai, featuring 14 oil paintings loaned from important private collectors, three of which span 6-meters wide and were specially created for Mathieu’s Grand Palais retrospective in Paris in 1978.

Yim Tin Tsai Arts Festival 2021

Organised by the Tourism Commission, the Yim Tin Tsai Arts Festival continues its three-year pilot scheme to instigate a new experience of art through the integration of culture, heritage and nature in everyday life. The festival takes on a virtual space to showcase its varied artworks in digital format, inviting viewers to immerse in a 360-degree virtual reality exhibition that encapsulates the unique natural landscape and history of the Sai Kung village.

Between the Lines: The Legends of Hong Kong Printing

This fascinating exhibition presents stories and illustrations of traditional printing techniques and movable type tools, as well as works and designs by emerging young designers who have assumed the mantle of reviving and modernising the craft of letter printing. Curators at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum train a special spotlight this month on the disappearing art form of lithography.

Chinese Surrealism

In association with the month-long Le French May arts festival, the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong &amp; Macau partners with Alisan Fine Arts to present Chinese Surrealism. The exhibition of contemporary Chinese ink paintings and sculptures focuses on dreamscapes and explorations of the unconscious mind – imagery more commonly associated with Western names such as Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso. Young Hong Kong female artists dominate a six-strong group selected for their impressive interpretation of surrealism through a Chinese lens.

Colour The World

Romeo + Juliet

The Hong Kong Ballet brings to life one of the most epic love stories of all time, Shakespeare’s classic Romeo and Juliet, with a contemporary Hong Kong-inspired twist. In this local iteration of the timeless tale of star-crossed lovers, the duo is caught in a war between rival triad families in the ’60s Hong Kong. The narrative follows their passion and tragedy in a fusion of dance and drama with original choreography by Septime Webre, Prokofiev’s dramatic score, and sumptuous cheongsam costumes.

Michelin-starred cultural and social destination Duddell’s lends its contemporary mixed-use space to an exhibition of 16 thought-provoking works owned by four eminent female collectors, including Mimi Brown, Karen Levy and Li Lin. Curve of Buoyancy spans such diverse subjects as Gothic architecture and functional straps in athleisurewear, and is inspired by the curved lightness of Wendell Dayton’s sculpture ‘For Calder’ (1975).

Jewellery &amp; Gem Asia Hong Kong

Asia’s most important jewellery event returns this year, albeit in a hybrid of physical and virtual programmes. Occupying 70,000sq.m of event space within the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, the gathering of all that glitters lives up to its year-on-year exciting line-up of exhibitors and special events. In celebration of artist Pierre Soulages&#8217; 100th birthday, the fine folks at Alisan Fine Arts will be showcasing the first ever solo exhibition of the artist right here in Hong Kong. Soulages&#8217; career has spanned for over seven decades making him one of France&#8217;s most important artists, and is said to be the master of post-war abstraction. Those with an appreciation for the colour, or rather non-colour of black will be delighted to see Soulages&#8217; interpretation of textures and patterns of the noir.

German photographer Thomas Ruff will have his works displayed over two floors in the <a href="https://www.davidzwirner.com.hk/">David Zwirner</a> gallery from now until the end of June. As a prominent photographer since the &#8217;80s Ruff&#8217;s&nbsp;Transforming Photography show is set to display his newest body of work&nbsp;flower.s (2018–)&nbsp;which combines digital manipulation and analog techniques to the Sabattier effect, as well as, his earlier works from nudes&nbsp;(1999–). Though seemingly self-explanatory the collection of erotic photos has been blurred and further manipulated leaving the photos to resemble something more abstract.

Another first for Hong Kong is coming later this week courtesy of&nbsp;<a href="https://whitecube.com/exhibitions">White Cube</a>, whose exhibition of English artist and writer&nbsp;Harland Miller will begin on the 31st. Looking to add paintings to his already impressive resume of four published novels such as International Lonely Guy and Stick to Thirty, Miller&#8217;s works on display will include new paintings, drawing and prints. Said to explore the meaning of text, image and the language of painting this is a debut you won&#8217;t want to miss.

A celebrated street artist based in New York, FUTURA is coming to Hong Kong this month with his FUTURA – Abstract Compass exhibition at Space 27. Displaying 27 new and existing works, the exhibition will showcase his unique abstract graffiti style, with signature evanescent symbols in spray paint can fashion.

Lui Shou-Kwan – A Centenary Celebration

Over at Alisan Fine Arts, meanwhile, legendary ink artist Lui Shou-Kwan&#8217;s solo exhibition is being staged in honour of his birth centenary. On display will be Lui Shou-Kwan&#8217;s revolutionary ink artworks that merged traditional Chinese ink art painting with Western Abstract Expressionism – a style that later came to be known as New Ink Movement.

Spanning Chinese objets d&#8217;art, historic furniture by Robert Goossens and ink paintings by contemporary artist Ren Zhong, the art exhibition deftly marries modernity with nostalgia through its showcase.

Beyond Basel: Four Satellite Art Exhibitions in Hong Kong

As you enter the plush premises of Landmark Mandarin Oriental&#8217;s MO Bar this weekend, don&#8217;t be surprised if your eyes are automatically drawn towards the walls, because hanging on them are a range of striking photographs of some of the most legendary stars of our times – from David Bowie to Lady Gaga – shot by none other than award-winning celebrity photographer Markus Klinko who&#8217;s hosting his first exhibition in Hong Kong titled 2000s: David Bowie and Beyond till 16 April. &nbsp;

And these photos are just the tip of the iceberg. Klinko has not only teamed up with The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, but also with Central-based art gallery Alisan Fine Arts to showcase some of the most iconic photos in his repertoire – be it Bowie&#8217;s behind-the-scenes portraits from his Heathen photoshoot or Beyoncé&#8217;s Dangerously in Love album cover. Shot entirely on Fuji cameras, what sets them apart from run-of-the-mill celebrity photos is Klinko&#8217;s unfailing ability to reveal an unexplored side of the artist&#8217;s personality in each of his ethereal, almost otherworldly compositions.&nbsp;

Keen not to miss out on the experience, Hong Kong&#8217;s art aficionados have been thronging Alisan Fine Arts since the opening night to appreciate the photos firsthand and also to support Hong Kong Adventist Hospital Foundation (HKAHF)&#8217;s cancer fund, with the proceeds of the sale going to this charity. And though Klinko&#8217;s exhibition is officially ending on 16 April, art lovers would rejoice to learn that some of his photos would be available for sale at Alisan Fine Arts for the whole of March.

All For A Good Cause: Markus Klinko’s ‘2000s: David Bowie and Beyond’ exhibition in Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s art scene may reach a peak every March, but those who have their heart set on art are in for some good news. A bunch of art exhibitions are coming up in town and we’ve rounded them up for you.

First up is ArtisTree’s Open Rehearsal Series by the International Contemporary Dance Collective (iCoDaCo) which is hosting a dance production and open workshops on 17, 20 and 22 August. Guests will not only be able to engage in open rehearsals with iCoDaCo members, but will also be able to appreciate the performances of stalwarts like the internationally renowned solo artist Mui Cheuk-yin, an internationally acclaimed solo artist, Joseph Lee, the only Hong Kong dancer to have taken part in the 2018 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and Weronika Pelczyńska, award-winning Polish dance artist.

Those looking to delve into the fine arts can, in the meanwhile, also check out the Impressionist, Modern &amp; Contemporary Art exhibition to be showcased at this year’s edition of Fine Art Asia 2018, which is taking place at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 29 September to 2 October. On display will be a whole range of contemporary art and sculpture pieces curated from across the world. A masterpiece by Surrealist painter Salvador Dali, La Vierge et le Rhinocéros, will be headlining the exhibition.

While there, you’d be well-advised to also check out the Photography exhibition at the art fair. Showcasing the best creations from a global selection of galleries chosen by Boogie Woogie Photography, the exhibition hosts a plethora of photographs from contemporary to vintage, from international photographers to Hong Kong’s very own shutterbugs. One of the highlights will be the f22 foto space (Hong Kong) which is hosting a solo exhibition by American photographer Elliott Erwitt. Best known for his candid black and white images, Erwitt has captured numerous iconic shots of luminaries like Marilyn Monroe, Che Guevara and Richard Nixon.

Meanwhile, Alisan Fine Arts is focusing on local heritage at its Aberdeen Gallery with an art exhibition titled Chinese Dreams, as participation in the South Island Cultural District Art Day 2018 on 22 September. Running from then till 15 December, the exhibition is a nostalgic look-back at Chinese art through the works of diaspora artists like Yi Kai and Wu Shaoxiang.

Alisan Fine Arts is currently hosting Stephen King’s first solo photography exhibition, Rhythms in Nature, from 24 January to 2 March 2018. Stephen, a landscape photographer based in Hong Kong, explores the hidden patterns in nature through his photographs. With several published works and awards under his belt, he has been recently ranked # 3 in the world (and #1 in HK) in the World’s Top Ten Landscape Photographers 2017 competition held by One Eyeland. We caught up with the ace photographer at the opening of his exhibition at Alisan Fine Arts.
Your exhibition is named Rhythms in Nature. What is the significance of this name?
Patterns or rhythms in landscapes fascinate me. Sometimes, these patterns are obvious, at other times, hidden. As human beings, we respond emotionally to these patterns and rhythms. We can see these patterns in grand vista-type shots or in intimate shots like grouping of leaves or designs on a rock. These natural rhythms really resonate with me and I hope to convey the same feelings to my viewers.

Some of your photographs look like paintings. Are you influenced by Chinese painters and their art? 
I do get this a lot. I think it’s because as a painter you can put elements on your canvas exactly as you wish. You don’t have any extraneous elements. Everything fits together harmoniously because you can control it. On the other hand, a photo can be chaotic or random.
For me, as a photographer, composition is very, very important. I take a lot of care to compose my photos. I brutally exclude things that don’t add to a picture. So when people see my photos, they compare them to paintings, because, like paintings, my photos don’t have extraneous elements.
To get to your question, I have been surrounded by Chinese paintings all my life because my mother owns an art gallery. My use of negative space and vertical composition is borrowed from Chinese paintings. But it’s not just Chinese paintings that influence me. I am also influenced by the works of Western painters like Georgia O&#8217;Keefe, Mark Rothko, etc. It’s not a conscious decision on my part, but unconsciously I feel drawn to the aesthetics of their paintings.

You have been honoured with several rewards and recognition. Is there any that is particularly close to your heart? 
One of my photos was recently selected to be on the October cover of Landscape Photography Magazine.&nbsp; I have also won the Best Single Image award in the Earth &amp; Climate category in Travel Photographer of the Year 2017, and have been ranked #3 in the World’s Top Ten Landscape Photographers 2017 competition held by One Eyeland. Last year I had a photo published in the Outdoor Photography Magazine in their top 150 photos. I have just been informed that they have selected two photos for the Top 150 list this year among 18,000 submissions. In fact, the two photos selected are displayed here at Alisan Fine Arts exhibition.

What are the challenges of taking landscape photos?
The thing about taking landscape photos is that it is very unpredictable. You can plan where you want to shoot, you can go to the best spot for taking photos, but the weather’s going to be different from what you planned. The light will be different from what you planned. So you need to be a bit spontaneous and work with what the landscape has on offer. This can be challenging, but this makes it so much fun as well. The same landscape looks completely different in different conditions. If there’s a storm coming, it could look dramatic, if you are shooting in direct sun, you can play with the patterns in the shadow. It’s all about your emotional response to the nature in front of you.
