Ahead of Hong Kong Spartan Race – Sprint/Super 2018, set to be held on 10 November, fitness enthusiasts all over the SAR are keenly anticipating the return of this annual outdoor excursion, which sees participants from four- up to 64-year-olds running, crawling, dunking, climbing and generally getting themselves hugely mucky, while clearly enjoying the whole experience. As to why it has become such a popular phenomenon, who better to ask than Gary Wan and Charlz Ng, the two organisers of the Spartan Race?

What makes the Spartan Race quite so different from any other athletic event? 
Well, to start with, there are at least 20 obstacles in each race – it’s probably the only occasion where people will have to jump into a pool full of mud. While most other marathons or running events focus solely on endurance, the Spartan Race treats strength as equally important.

This year, the races will take place at&nbsp; the Kam Tin Country Club in Yuen Long, which is famous for offering one of Hong Kong’s most stunning and picturesque sunsets. We have also partnered with financial services company China Everbright, which is a good match for our environmental focus.

Who can participate?
The Adults Race is for runners aged 14 years and above, while the Kids Race accepts four- to 13-year-olds. There is no maximum age. In our last Spartan Race in April, we were happy to see more local racers than foreigners. At first, the race seemed like something out of Mission Impossible, but as more and more people have completed it, it has become an item on many New Year Resolution lists.

Easter festivities may be behind us, but Hong Kong&#8217;s calendar still remains packed to the brim. From the rugby mania of Hong Kong Sevens to the aerial acrobatics of Cirque du Soleil&#8217;s Kooza, here&#8217;s a round-up of April events in Hong Kong. &nbsp;
5 April: Ching Ming Festival

Ching Ming – literally translating as ‘clean and bright’ – is the day that Chinese people sweep the graves of their ancestors. The festival is an important day of commemoration, obliging families to weed graves, touch up headstone inscriptions and make offerings of food while lighting incense. Traditionally, many people burn paper offerings at gravesites for their ancestors to use in their afterlife. Don’t be surprised to see an exodus of residents moving from the city’s streets to the hillside graveyards on this well-observed day.

The Hong Kong leg of the Spartan Race forms part of the world’s biggest obstacle event, comprising 240 races in 25 countries across the globe. If you are looking for a physical challenge and something to take you out of your comfort zone, this is an opportunity not to be missed. Participants should be prepared to run, climb, push, throw and crawl through walls, hills, trees and even barbed wire. Kids under 14 can take part in the junior races. Taking place across a 1.5km course, the emphasis is firmly on teamwork, fun and getting muddy.

Cirque du Soleil returns to Hong Kong this April with Kooza, an all-new, all-thrilling big-top production. The aptly named Barclay’s Moontrekker trail race doesn’t just challenge participants with difficult terrain, it asks them to traverse across the wilderness in almost complete darkness. Runners can choose from two distances, the Moonlit 30 and Sunrise 43. Both cover roughly the same route, and the goal is to reach the summit of the 934-metre Lantau Peak in time to enjoy a glorious sunrise.

Launched in 1986 as a special fundraising event, Oxfam Trailwalker is now among the most popular Hong Kong races each year. Participating teams of four take on the challenge of completing the 100km Maclehose Trail – which runs across the entire New Territories – in under 48 hours. As you can imagine, the biggest difficulty is the need to push on without any sleep. Don’t attempt this one unless you’ve completed significant training.

The Spartan Race definitely isn’t one of your run-of-the-mill Hong Kong races, it’s an endurance test designed to push you to your physical limit. The upcoming Spartan Sprint event in April features a six-kilometre obstacle course that will see participants leaping past burning logs, climbing up walls and pulling themselves through mud in the famed wire crawl.

Matilda Hospital’s annual sedan chair race isn’t the most challenging or the longest by any stretch of the imagination. What it is, though, is fun. Held around Halloween each year, the charity race sees participants team up in groups of seven (including one passenger) to race around Mount Kellett while carrying a traditional sedan chair. Many dress up in creative costumes, and there are tonnes of fun prizes up for grabs.
