There’s a special kind of magic when a family sits down to share a meal and everyone, from the littlest pasta-lover to the most discerning nonno, feels instantly at ease. That wonderful, reassuring feeling is exactly what Spaghetti House Tsim Sha Tsui serves up, and it starts long before the first plate of spaghetti arrives. It begins the moment you step into a space deliberately designed to feel like a sun-kissed Italian street that somehow wandered into the heart of Hong Kong.

Walk up to the entrance, and you’ll notice the outdoor-style bricks underfoot and climbing the walls, complete with painted wall-mounted planters that look ready for a lazy afternoon watering. Real outdoor street lamps cast a warm glow, while cleverly placed street signs and road markers arrange themselves into the Spaghetti House logo. It’s pure street theatre, the kind of casual, lived-in European vibe you might stumble upon on any charming Italian corner. Yet this is no generic Italian fantasy. Because this Spaghetti House has been a Tsim Sha Tsui landmark for generations, the designers wove local soul into every “street.” Look closely at those planter murals, and you’ll spot the Star Ferry gliding across the harbour, snippets of the waterfront streetscape, and other unmistakable Hong Kong flourishes. It’s an Italian atmosphere with a Victoria Harbour heartbeat.

Push open the door and the biggest design surprise hits you right between the eyes (and the ceiling). A bright, radiant sky stretches overhead; a light-panel ceiling that is one of the project’s star features. Even though the restaurant sits on the first floor of a shopping mall, the team refused to surrender the outdoor feeling. Existing windows were kept wherever possible and framed with outdoor-style architectural surrounds, while the luminous sky panel floods the space with daylight brightness. The best part? It’s fully dimmable. Come evening, the “sky” softens into a gentle dusk, shifting the mood from sunny lunchtime energy to intimate nighttime glow without ever losing that open-air magic.

Venture deeper and the European street continues to unfold. Elegant arched doorways and architectural details appear just as they would on any real Italian thoroughfare; soft curves that invite you to wander from one cosy nook to the next. The arches don’t just look pretty; they create natural sightlines and intimate pockets perfect for family conversations, first dates, or that long overdue catch-up over a shared plate of carbonara.

Every brick, every lamp, every painted ferry and dimmable sky panel works together to deliver one simple promise: you can relax. This is a place built for lingering, for laughter, for the comforting clatter of cutlery and the happy chaos of a family meal. The design doesn’t shout “look at me.” It whispers “come in, stay awhile, you’re home.”

So next time you’re in Tsim Sha Tsui, skip the ordinary and step onto this little Italian street that somehow knows Hong Kong by heart. Spaghetti House has turned design into pure comfort food for the soul, and the pasta’s pretty outstanding too. Bring the whole famiglia. The sky’s waiting, the arches are open, and the table is set for memories.

Building Futures: The key to unlocking prime property opportunities with Henry Wong

Since the Hong Kong Club opened its doors to the privileged few in 1846, the city’s seats of power and influence have been chiselled in dark mahogany, fuelled by single-malt whisky, and locked behind increasingly costly individual or corporate debentures. Admittance to the apex of the social pyramid meant enduring a decades-long waiting list for the privilege of making small talk over the manicured greens of Deep Water Bay. Status was measured by the rigid permanence of family pedigree and the financial capacity required to clear an old-money committee ballot.

But look closely at the glittering skyline today, and you will see that the monoliths of prestige are fracturing. A quiet, glamorous coup has taken place. The modern elite of Hong Kong – high-net-worth blend of digital pioneers, avant-garde art collectors, fashion tastemakers and global jetsetters – have collectively walked away from the dusty boardrooms of their parents. In their place, a new empire of private-member spaces has risen.

These are the contemporary luxury clubs: sanctuaries where creative currency trumps corporate tenure, where architectural drama replaces colonial nostalgia, and where exclusivity is measured by the vibrancy of the human capital inside the room rather than the size of a bank account. Crucially, in a city saturated with billionaires, simply being able to pay is no longer enough to cross these thresholds.

Today’s gatekeepers have realised that a room filled only with wealth is inherently boring. They are actively orchestrating spaces where a tech visionary, an international art collector, a top-tier chef, and a financial titan share the same air in absolute privacy. Welcome to the new era of high society, where the baseline of luxury is defined by a flawless trifecta: good wine, good food and immaculate service.

The following seven pillars anchoring modern affluent Hong Kong society reflect this shifting stratosphere. Note: membership fees are stated as an indication only and may no longer be accurate.

Suspended high above the water at the pinnacle of the Rosewood Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui, this club has redefined geographic and cultural dominance by pulling off a brilliant dual-axis layout. The Carlyle & Co. Harbour Club channels the soulful glamour of Manhattan’s iconic hotel, The Carlyle, featuring private listening rooms, hidden speakeasies and the celebrated Café Carlyle live-music salon, where international performers perform for a velvet-draped room of cultural arbiters. Meanwhile, its new corporate-adjacent Town Club venue in Central’s New World Tower provides a sharp, sophisticated and ultra-discreet daytime counterpart. Entry requires a strong endorsement network from existing members, plus vetting by committee to ensure applicants bring genuine character over mere capital.

Tucked inside the Bank of China Tower in Central, this establishment operates as a monument to the timeless art of the corporate deal conducted over first-class food and wine. Carrying a global legacy that stretches from Venice to New York, Cipriani functions as a highly coveted members-only lunch and dinner hub for the city’s C-suite executives, senior partners and international financiers. There are no modern co-working desks, tech lounges or fitness corners to be found within its walls. Instead, it commands respect through an unchanging formula of flawless Italian service, pristine formal dining and world-class Bellinis. A strict application and vetting system restricts the room to the traditional engines of global capitalism.

Housed inside Central’s historic Pedder Building, this gastronomic cathedral brings together culinary purists who view fine dining and rare vintages as an art form. Facilities are dedicated entirely to uncompromised epicurean devotion rather than standard social-club amenities or lifestyle networking. Anchored by a multi-storey glass and steel wine vault that serves as the visual heartbeat of the space, the venue weaves together three distinct, premium dining concepts: Bâtard (French), Hop Sze (Cantonese) and Le Clos (comfort food and cocktails). Every meal is served with impeccable glassware and master-sommelier dedication, making it a sanctuary for the city’s serious wine collectors.

Occupying an entire skyscraper in Sheung Wan, this global phenomenon completely flipped high society on its head by implementing a strict ‘no corporate suits’ policy to protect its social chemistry. Within the vertical ecosystem, net worth and traditional corporate titles are entirely irrelevant; instead, the committee vets candidates based on their creative soul and cultural impact. By day, its industrial-glam floors buzz with a style-forward demographic of filmmakers, artists and tech entrepreneurs hot-desking and collaborating. By night, the energy shifts seamlessly to private screening rooms, a state-of-the-art Soho Active gym, and an iconic rooftop pool space. Soho House is a masterclass in modern networking, where the next great artistic venture is sketched out over craft cocktails.

Located inside the Old Bank of China Building in Central, this club remains the ultimate bastion of retro-glamour. Founded by the late, legendary Sir David Tang, it is an unapologetic romance with 1930s Shanghai elegance. Serving as a living, breathing museum, the jaw-dropping collection of contemporary Chinese art decorating the walls contrasts beautifully with cheongsam-clad staff and slow-turning ceiling fans. This is the room where local dynasties, multi-generational families and visiting global dignitaries share dim sum, creating a power dynamic dense with historical gravity. The China Club does not chase modern trends; it commands respect by remaining a steadfast anchor of traditional high society, designed to remind you exactly who built the foundations of the city’s wealth.

Tucked away on Lyndhurst Terrace in Central, this boutique enclave represents the absolute cutting edge of modern anonymity and digital wealth. Intentionally maintaining a microscopic community footprint compared to its multi-storey competitors, it acts as a tightly guarded townhouse sanctuary designed for the city’s digital aristocracy, crypto pioneers and alternative-asset collectors. It seamlessly bridges the physical and digital worlds, featuring walls lined with rotating contemporary fine art alongside high-definition digital screens showcasing rare digital masterpieces. With hyper-advanced personal spirit lockers and an ultra-discreet private cigar tasting room, it provides a quiet space for late-night deal-making completely out of the public eye.

The rapid ascension of these modern sanctuaries alongside the steady endurance of the old-guard business, sports and lifestyle clubs proves that luxury in Hong Kong has permanently shifted its axis. The modern elite are no longer looking for a trophy membership to hang on a wall; they are seeking immersive worlds that reflect their personal passions, respect their need for absolute privacy, and stimulate their senses. Hong Kong’s new crop of private clubs proves that the ultimate modern luxury is a community built precisely in your own image.

Prime Membership: A new breed of Hong Kong private clubs emphasises epicurism over elitism and creativity over capital

Andy Ann looks a little more tanned than usual, sporting that rosy glow you get when you’re living your best life and your calendar has absolutely refused to let you be boring. “I’ve been making the most of the last days of summer, travelling, hiking, golfing. You know, the things that remind you the sun still exists outside of boardrooms,” says the serial architect of digital ventures as he settles into a chair in his Admiralty headquarters.

The walls around him are covered in paintings, some by rising local artists, others by more established names. He points to an abstract canvas with obvious pride: “This one was made by my daughter.” He lingers on another piece, created without any intention of traction by an artist whose work caught fire years later. “It’s the same way I handle work,” he affirms. “You put something honest into the world. You don’t force the hype. Sometimes the impact finds you. It’s all about giving back.”

That philosophy runs through every chapter of Ann’s backstory, leading to the AI-driven ecosystems he builds today as the founder and Chairman of NDN Group, and father of countless online portals.

Childhood Circuits

He follows a strong family code. His grandfather, Dr T.K. Ann, textile king and a drafter of the HKSAR Basic Law, dreamed of promoting the Chinese language so strangers around the world might reply “Ni hao ma” instead of “Hello”. His father, the industrialist James Ann, harnessed that vision, helping to design one of the first Chinese-input computers. Dad and uncles also bolted Japanese red LED lights onto radios, creating the clock radio.

“Technology and innovation are kind of in the family’s bloodstream,” says the 21st-century digital-tech pioneer. “Each generation has been thinking about the same thing: how technology and business can drive impact for the world. That’s what I grew up inside, and it’s what I’ve carried into everything I build.”

Laughingly, he says he’s no boomer; born in 1979, he’s on the end of Gen X. Which, if you think about it, is the generation that grew up learning computers were powerful and also learning how to fix things manually, because no one was going to help you.

A family legacy was appreciating the value of the calculated risk. “Innovation is risk itself. Without risk, you don’t innovate. I’ve watched many businesses fail not because they run out of ideas, but because they stop wanting to take risks. Protecting the numbers becomes the goal, and innovation quietly dies,” he explains.

Click Wait

Ann’s entrepreneurial switch flipped in the summer of 1999. While studying economics at the University of British Columbia, he was interning at a pre-YouTube streaming-media startup in Silicon Valley, taking a Stanford telecom course, and writing a paper on how 3G could elevate new media. Beijing had just been awarded the 2008 Olympics and he visualised digital billboards that could live-stream ads and content across a wireless network with a single click. He and a college buddy built WAP pages and prototypes on their Nokia phones – food finders, games, early ads.

While that enterprising spirit didn’t race as far as the Games, by 2002 Ann was back in Hong Kong and heading NDN, now a digital conglomerate in data, mobile and media technologies. The ambition to found his own company was fuelled by the realisation, two months into his first corporate job, that the youngest managing director there was 38. He quit immediately. “If I don’t build my own dreams, someone will hire me to build theirs,” he reasoned.

The serial ventures began – digital display network Hot Media launched in 2004, and two years later came Hot Mob, one of the first mobile ad networks on iOS and Android. He chuckles: “[My 2008 dream] didn’t end up as mega digital billboards in Beijing, but we did build a massive digital out-of-home network, a Wi-Fi hotspot network, and a mobile ad network for Hong Kong.”

Wedding Gift

His entrepreneurial journey was not without setbacks, though. As he and his wife, Gretchen King-Ann, planned their nuptials in 2006, he was inspired to raise 60 million renminbi in seed capital to build Darizi, one of China’s largest luxury wedding platforms. Then a term-sheet clause was triggered, and overnight his equity was diluted to 0.006 percent and he was promptly removed by the board.

“That kind of loss teaches you things winning never can,” he shares. “I’m genuinely grateful it happened when I was young. Every venture I’ve built since, how I think about growth, control, cash, and the terms I put my name to, carries the fingerprints of that year. I lost a company, but I gained the judgment that built everything after it.” He stopped chasing single companies and started engineering ecosystems with multiple reinforcing streams.

No Meme Policy

He determines what to build by first deciding what he will never do: games, crypto meme coins, virtual land, anything that doesn’t create genuine value for humanity. He then follows the classic Chinese sequence of responsibility: self, family, community, world. Responsibility was never abstract in the Ann household. “When people trust you – your team, your clients, your investors – you hold something that isn’t only yours,” he notes.

YAS Digital was born from personal frustration with insurance agents who pitched everything and covered almost nothing; XN Insight stemmed from relationship managers pushing underperforming funds. GoImpact, which empowers startups to create social, financial and environmental change, grew from watching global warming reshape boardroom decisions. He advises: “Rule out what has no value. Start with the problem in front of you. Then let the circle widen.”

AI Captain

Being a venture architect means building a network of companies that share infrastructure, data and an AI backbone. “The old way to grow was linear,” he says. “Now, with AI and AI agents, everything gets to 10X [10-fold exponential increase], sometimes 100X, because time-to-delivery is compressed, cost is compressed, and you’re able to change the entire company architecture and make it AI-native.”

YAS, the risk intelligence for the machine economy, newly launched embedded micro-insurance partnership for corporate robot deployments is the clearest example: one risk-intelligence data layer connecting EVs, robotaxis, drones and eventually satellites, turning live data into real-time risk scores: “10X growth doesn’t come from working 10 times harder. It comes from designing a system where AI and a network of ventures do the compounding for you.”

Metrics of Success

The underlying goal of Ann’s AI-driven ecosystems is to help Hong Kong become the place where Chinese innovation goes international and global ideas enter Asia. “Success isn’t a number for me personally,” he emphasises. “It’s seeing more Hong Kong and China founders shine on the world stage – a new generation of founders who believe this city is where you come to build the future.”

Professionally, pride comes when team members become entrepreneurs themselves, when the next generation of founders creates real value and refuses to quit, and when a little support helps them through their own process. “Success isn’t the money you make… it is who you become, and who you help become.” He urges the Gens Y and Z to “dream big. Why? Because it’s free! Help one person at a time, and leave the world a little better than you found it.”

As we finish the shoot, Ann – always finding a reason to be in a good mood, whether by inspiring the next wave of founders or collecting paintings and memories with his daughter – suggests a few lunch spots around Admiralty. Supporting other people’s businesses is just another way of connecting the dots. The same principle that started with a grandfather’s dream of “Ni hao ma” and a father’s clock radio still holds: put something honest into the world, keep taking the hard path, and watch the network compound.

Metro Mood: Autumn chic for urban dwellers

Step inside this nearly 3,000-square-foot family residence at The Palace in Kowloon Tong, and you’ll feel it immediately: natural light, modern clarity, and thoughtful design that make everyday living feel quietly extraordinary. With four bedrooms plus flexible living spaces, this is a home built for connection: morning routines, homework moments, weekend gatherings, and cozy evenings when everyone finally comes back under the same roof.

At the heart of the home, the living room and dining room open up in the brightest, most uplifting way. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows stretch the space upward and outward, bringing an airy, almost gallery-like openness that changes with the sun throughout the day. Here, white marble with subtle grey veining becomes the visual anchor; clean, elegant, and unmistakably refined. Underfoot, light grey quartz stone continues the fresh, contemporary mood, creating a seamless foundation that feels modern without ever feeling cold.

The designer’s palette is predominantly white, intentionally softened by grey glass accents, especially around the dining room’s towering windows, so the contrast looks intentional rather than stark. In the living room, comfort is treated like a design principle. A bright white sofa sets the tone, while a square cushion placed between key pieces adds a casual note and, cleverly, extra storage.

Even the practical details are dressed in style: the coffee table and the semi-height storage cabinet behind the sofa are clad in the same white marble with grey veining, echoing the TV feature wall and keeping the entire room visually cohesive. Opposite the living area, you’ll find a floating shoe cabinet with a clean, white design that connects smoothly to the TV cabinet across the way, like a gentle visual rhythm guiding you from one space to the next. In the master suite, the door itself becomes part of the aesthetic, finished in grey interlayer glass for a sleek, elevated touch.

And then there’s the dining room, where meals become moments. A row of floor-to-ceiling storage cabinets frames the space with a dramatic sense of height, finished with rose gold accents that bring warmth and a hint of sparkle. In front of the cabinets, a protruding wall section creates a three-dimensional focal point, perfect for mounting a television without breaking the room’s elegance. Nearby, two storage cabinets of varying heights do double duty: they offer places to display decorative favourites while also including a side table and a single seat designed specifically for comfortable shoe changing. It’s the kind of thoughtful convenience families love most; beautiful on the surface, smart in practice.

The dining table is made of marble, anchoring the room in timeless sophistication, while a stunning chandelier above adds the finishing glow. Together, these elements create a dining atmosphere that feels refined enough for celebrations, yet effortlessly liveable for everyday family nights.

Need a quiet retreat, or a flexible space for the household? The study is open-plan and can easily serve as a family room, depending on how your lifestyle flows. The desk is positioned by the window so the room stays bright and energizing, and on either side, contrasting storage pieces deepen the visual effect: a white wardrobe on one side and a dark wood storage cabinet on the other. Light versus dark, clean versus warm, layered design that keeps the room from feeling flat and makes it feel more “you.”

The master bedroom is designed to be both elegant and cozy, an oasis that still feels current. The 床头墙 (headboard wall) is upholstered in beige padding for soft comfort, then elevated with rose gold mirrored accents at the centre and on both sides, an elegant touch that feels grand without being overwhelming. Beneath the suspended ceiling, cove lighting adds a gentle, flattering glow, while oak-toned flooring brings warmth to the entire space. Even casual seating is built in: the windowsill is widened and cushioned, inviting you to linger with a book or watch the day unfold. Under it all, grey glass provides a sleek and stable foundation, keeping the look refined and modern.

The master suite also delivers on everyday luxury: a walk-in closet and an open-plan bathroom. By removing the bathroom wall, the designer creates a feeling of openness, as the room breathes. Between the sleeping area and the bathroom, a row of floor-to-ceiling storage cabinets becomes a beautiful partition, surfaced with grey-veined white marble and grey glass to form a feature wall that feels intentional, architectural, and softly dramatic.

Two children’s rooms extend the same design logic: smart storage, flexible living, and personalized style, so each child’s personality gets room to shine. In both rooms, storage cabinets act as partition walls to maximize usable space, making the layout feel generous even when life gets busy. For both son and daughter, the beds are placed on the windowsills, turning natural light into a daily luxury.

The son’s room leans into a darker, more grounded mood. Walls and one side of the window feature dark wood finishes, complemented by a dark brown wardrobe at the foot of the bed. Since the bed sits elevated on the windowsill, an L-shaped step doubles as seating and extends toward the wall and door, an ingenious setup for hosting friends or lounging comfortably. For his wine-collecting interest, a wine cabinet is integrated at the centre of the storage unit, blending functionality with a cool, personalized touch.

The daughter’s room takes a lighter approach. Pale wood flooring and white furniture create a soft, elegant atmosphere. Because she loves music, the room includes a digital piano, cleverly designed so it can be tucked beneath the wardrobe when not in use and pulled out when she’s ready to play. It’s convenience with style, and it helps the room stay open, tidy, and ready for creativity.

This isn’t just a home; it’s a well-designed family stage where life can unfold beautifully. From bright, glass-filled social spaces to private, carefully detailed retreats for every member of the household, the overall effect is unmistakable: harmony, clarity, and comfort—wrapped in modern luxury.

What’s on? Things to do this October in Hong Kong

There’s a moment every serious vinyl listener knows. You drop the needle, lean in… and something’s still in the way. A faint crackle. A haze across the midrange. The music is there, but you’re not quite inside it.

That haze isn’t the recording. It’s the record.

For nearly half a century Clearaudio has been building high-end turntables and tonearms in Germany with the kind of quiet obsession only true analogue people understand. In 2002 they turned that same obsession toward a different problem: how to clean a record properly. Not “good enough.” Properly. The first Matrix arrived. Twenty-five years of continuous refinement later, the company has arrived at a place most manufacturers only claim to reach: mature, stable, almost boringly reliable excellence.

Which is exactly why 2026 is their Brand Promotion Year in Hong Kong and Macau — and why the Hong Kong High-End Audio Show is the moment to act.

Three machines. One fluid. Limited quantities. Clear prices.

The Flagship — double matrix professional SONIC

Think of it as the dual-mode camera of record cleaning. One button runs the entire automatic cycle. Or you take full manual control from the panel and decide every step yourself. Sonic vibration reaches deep into the groove while staying almost silent. Variable speed, built-in static removal, heavy-duty construction meant for continuous use. Collectors and dealers who clean entire collections choose this one. The set includes two 2.5-litre bottles of pure groove ESSENCE (5 litres total). HK$36,800

The Compact — smart matrix DOUBLE

All the essential intelligence in a more manageable footprint. Same philosophy, same fluid partnership, just dialled for the serious listener who wants professional results without the full industrial footprint. Comes with one 2.5-litre bottle of ESSENCE.
HK$22,800

The Value Choice — smart matrix SILENT

Quiet, effective, and deliberately priced so more people can stop pretending a microfibre cloth is enough. Includes one 2.5-litre bottle of ESSENCE. HK$15,800

The fluid itself — pure groove ESSENCE — is not an afterthought. It is the partner every one of these machines was designed around.

German engineering since 1978. Record cleaning refined since 2002. And right now, for a limited window around the Hong Kong High-End Audio Show, these sets are available through the official Hong Kong and Macau distributor at the prices above.

You can read about sonic vibration and dual-mode operation all day. Or you can book a short appointment, walk into the Tsuen Wan showroom, and watch a dirty record come out looking (and sounding) like it just left the pressing plant.

Once you’ve seen the difference, you can’t unsee it. The static disappears. The music steps forward. You finally hear what was always on the record.

Make the appointment. Bring a few of your favourite “almost clean” records. Hear right through.

Hear Right Through with Clear Audio

Enter Ming Court, and you get drafted into a full-on, perfectly choreographed Cantonese show. The Cordis Hong Kong’s Chinese fine-dining room hums with quiet confidence. Executive Chef Li Yuet-faat, the man behind the magic, knows exactly how to conjure impeccable Cantonese dishes. In his nimble hands, simple ingredients are transformed into unmistakable flavours through purity, precision and wok hei, the breath of the wok.

He says: “Cantonese cooking does not require heavy use of sauces to hide flavours. Instead, it is about bringing out the natural, fresh taste of the ingredients using precise cooking skills and wok heat (high-heat stir-frying).” That mindset is all over the menu like a signature on a masterpiece.

Whiskey‑infused Charcoal Bun with Egg Yolk Custard

Then there’s Ming Cellar, which is where the evening gets dangerous, in the best way. Over 300 wine labels from more than 100 regions might seem over the top until you realise the point isn’t variety for its own sake. It’s curation. The sommelier offers intimate daily tastings, because why settle for your usual pours when someone can guide you towards a pairing that makes you stop mid-bite?

Roasted Crispy‑Skin Chicken

Since Ming Court aims for aura as well as exceptional flavour, you can also step into the Lalique private room inspired by the famed French crystal brand’s Iconics Rose Nebula collection. This is a truly iconic dining table that makes you sit up straighter and suddenly remember you’re capable of being impressed. The pairing here isn’t just wine and food; it’s also atmosphere and artistry.

Chef Li explains how teamwork between the kitchen and the sommeliers informs the wine pairing at Ming Court. Cantonese food is all about umami and texture, so they don’t simply match seafood with white wine because that’s the norm. Highlighting their more nuanced philosophy, he reveals: “We try using lighter red wine to bring out the seafood’s freshness.” In other words, they don’t follow rules; they understand them.

Now, the heart of it: the Ming Court Dégustation Menu, which we have on one rainy Saturday. As its grand billing suggests, this is a guided tasting of signature creations and cherished classics, crafted from top-quality local and global ingredients.

The amuse-bouche arrives as a small, bright and undeniably deliberate union of drunken notes and decadence: Magnolia Lab Roselle liqueur and foie gras terrine with passion fruit. Then comes a duo of honey-barbecued supreme pork loin and sliced suckling pig with black-truffle paste and pineapple.

Chef Li’s example of innovation built on tradition hits home right here. He notes how they keep the classic suckling-pig roasting technique for that crispy perfection, then modernise the experience with sweet pineapple and earthy black truffle. That’s exactly what you taste: classic craft, upgraded imagination.

The menu then turns rich and comforting. There’s stuffed crab shell, deep-fried with creamy depth and a sweet seafood pop, followed by Eight Treasure soup. This broth of abalone, fish maw, chicken, shiitake, bamboo pith, black fungus, layers of dried tangerine peel and ginger character lands like a warm, luxurious hug.

And the “okay wow” dish? Chinese spiny lobster from Sai Kung and crab roe are melded with braised elegance. Striking a chord with even the most seasoned of lobster lovers, this presentation reminds you there’s a difference between eating seafood and experiencing seafood.

Served in a clay pot, the meaty main of A5 Wagyu is a showcase of soy sauce-driven, pan-seared finesse, while chilled mango, pomelo, coconut and sago cream deliver a textural, sweet-smooth finish that makes you feel like the chef carefully orchestrated your exit.

Maestro Li shares that success means consistent quality and frequently returning guests because that’s the real reward: trust built over time. So come to the Mong Kok Ming Court hungry and curious. And if you think Cantonese dining can’t be both traditional and thrilling, well, their wok hei will humble you fast.

Court of Appeal: Wok-fired wonders and daring wines paired in the Rose room make Ming Court supreme

Meeting Arthur Shek on a fine afternoon, we step forward to shake hands, inadvertently interrupting his mission to fix his tie. It’s the kind of detail that says ‘precision’ before he even speaks. Then, almost immediately, the picture widens. The corporate cadence of a seasoned management consultant (he’s Managing Partner of McKinsey’s Hong Kong office) gives way to something livelier. There’s a thriving Millennial side to Shek, built on consistency (he goes to the gym religiously), community (he co-founded youth-empowerment social enterprise Project Melo), and a belief that strategy matters most when it changes what people can imagine about their future.

Shek carries Hong Kong in the way he talks: fast, confident and proud. “Since I was young, I always thought of Hong Kong as the best place on earth,” he enthuses. “I loved the East meets West aspects, the fast pace and the convenience.” That famous pace – you either learn to move with it or get left behind – shaped his “role in the world” as someone who doesn’t just observe systems, but helps design what comes next.

He studied at Diocesan Boys’ School until he was 17, then went to the UK for five years, first to Colchester Royal Grammar School, then the University of Cambridge. But he doesn’t talk about that move like it was an escape. Leaving his beloved city, he felt lonely and lost – until something clicked into place. “I had a great group of friends at the school, also from Hong Kong, and they helped me get through tough times,” he says. Even better, the relationship endured. “Some of us are still close today.”

Mentor Mentality

The experience instilled a belief that community doesn’t just help you survive; it helps you turn ‘hard’ into ‘rewarding’. “Since graduating, I have always wanted to stay close to, and work with, young and talented people,” he shares. He led a mentorship programme at Cambridge, where he learned the key insight that mentorship isn’t one-directional.

“Mentorship can be a two-way street, with mentors benefitting through hearing different perspectives and understanding the youth POV,” he expounds. That youth point of view doesn’t just inform his non-profit work at Project Melo; it also sets the tone for how he approaches leadership, technology and AI, with curiosity first.

He credits studying economics as the shift that pulled him toward business and analytical thinking rather than engineering or science. “I was particularly interested in microeconomics, how individuals make decisions and optimise their choices.”

Consulting Change

Fresh out of university, he joined McKinsey in 2009, and still relies on this way of thinking when advising companies on strategy and transformation. Pointing out a fundamental shift in management consulting over the past decade, he says: “Ten years ago it was about giving great insights and recommendations. Today, though, it is about driving change and delivering outcomes.” His work now is more operational, involves a longer time span, and is more collaborative. It also requires expertise from the likes of data scientists, software engineers and UX designers.

When he was a young professional, success looked like titles and speed, and how he compared to his peers. Then he realised that “the world is very big and there are so many other paths to satisfaction.” He now cares more about what he calls “outside of work” satisfaction: friends you can rely on, impact on others in need, and, importantly, “I definitely care a lot less about what other people think!”

Another value shift learned over time is that “family always comes first”. He realised family isn’t just comfort; it’s a stabiliser. “They always have my best interests at heart and also have my back. And of course, the other way round,” he notes. In a career that comes with pressure, boards, leadership and transformation, family becomes a quiet operating system – acting as your anchor, even when everything else is moving.

Agency of Youth

Gen Y Shek, who embraced a traditional ‘nine-to-five’ career, sees the Gen Z ‘slashers’ era as a “good thing”. “The younger generation want more meaning, satisfaction, flexibility and overall balance [in life], and they are much more likely to move and explore new things,” he opines of today’s young creators, influencers, day traders and more who don’t limit themselves to one all-consuming job. He views this as evidence of agency – it’s not that the next generation is lacking ambition; they are simply redefining it.

Despite this positivity, he describes Project Melo’s origin as a shared recognition among his co-founders that something was off. “We noticed the hope gap,” he says, recalling an event where people were asked to rate out of 10 how they felt about the future. “CEOs gave 7s or 8s, while many of the students gave 4s or 5s.”

The contrast was striking, and it pushed Melo – a platform dedicated to empowering youth to initiate social-impact projects by connecting them with business and society leaders – towards its dual purpose of helping youngsters feel more optimistic and capable, while enlightening the older generations as to why youth feel the way they do.

Shek shares the numbers since Melo’s founding in 2019 – over 6,000 youth engaged; 80 CEOs; 7,000-plus volunteer hours contributed to local NGOs; more than 5,000 secondary-school students receiving free AI-literacy training through the flagship AI-5000 initiative – but keeps the emphasis firmly on principles: distinctive, inclusive, impactful, authentic and youth-led.

Nurturing the New Generation

He also names the problems youth care about – mental health, sustainability, inequality – and positions Melo as a pipeline for “nurturing a generation of change agents”. “We have an amazing team and a really special core group of co-founders,” he says of Kenny Lam, Stephanie Lo and Louisa Mak, all close friends.

His pride, here, isn’t about scale for its own sake; it’s about consistency in purpose. Back on that fine afternoon, after our formal greeting, he finishes adjusting his tie like he’s making sure every detail is in place, then he talks with electrifying, rousing energy about how a better tomorrow is possible for all.

Personally, Arthur Shek enjoys a career built with business discipline and real-world impact, but he’s also a builder of youth pathways through Melo, pushing hope into the hands of students, where it becomes confidence, belonging and agency. It is his fervent belief that Hong Kong’s new generation is the most exciting yet, and they should be supported to take up the mantle.
