<p>Shopping for priceless art at auction with virtual money is fast becoming a reality. Earlier this year, Christie’s accepted payment by cryptocurrency on the vast majority of lots – about 93% – in an auction dedicated to art created by artificial intelligence. It’s a transactional breakthrough that will be welcomed by many, especially young, tech-savvy art investors, yet others are still to be convinced of digital currency’s durability, and highlight its potential risks.</p>

<p>Cryptocurrency was first used as payment for a physical artwork at a major auction house four years ago, according to Michael Bouhanna, Sotheby’s Head of Digital Art and NFTs in New York. The sale in question, in May 2021, involved the quintessential Banksy painting <em>Love is in the Air</em>, with Sotheby’s providing the option to pay in Bitcoin (BTC) or Ether (ETH) via the Coinbase exchange.</p>

<p>“We made a decision to accept cryptocurrency for selected physical works in 2021 in response to the evolving art market and to attract an additional pool of collectors,” says Bouhanna of this pioneering initiative. “We were noticing an increasing appetite among collectors – many of a younger generation – for seamless payment options when doing business with us, and for many, this provided another method to participate in our sales.”</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Confidence in Compliance</h3>



<p>As with any other payment at auction, compliance checks and due diligence for crypto transactions are rigorous and all-important, especially given that the sums involved can be astronomical, equivalent to millions of US dollars. “Crypto is no different from any of the other currencies we accept, and all transactions are subject to applicable laws and regulations in whichever currency they choose to pay in,” states Bouhanna.</p>

<p>He adds that Sotheby’s has been accepting crypto for some time now on individual lots and groups of works, and the auction house will continue to offer it as an option when it makes sense. “It’s important that everyone who transacts with us [in virtual currency] feels as welcome in our world as any other client,” he says.</p>

<p>Other auction houses are getting in on the act, too. Phillips Hong Kong accepts crypto on certain occasions when it is perceived to be a fit. During Hong Kong Art Week 2025, payment by crypto was offered for a <em>Spaces</em> digital art exhibition of eclectic works reflecting upon the intersection of art, technology and impermanence.</p>

<p>Not all auction houses have taken up the crypto baton, though. Bonham’s indicated that its policy at this juncture is not to accept cryptocurrency as a form of payment.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tapping into New Wealth</h3>



<p>Sean Hung, founder and CEO of fintech platform Acwires, can see the logic in auction houses beginning to accept crypto, aligning with how young collectors want to transact. “Over the past decade, there’s also been a lot of new wealth generated from cryptocurrency-related businesses such as service operation, trading, decentralised applications, et cetera. They are part of the new wave of collectors that auction houses would like to target,” he says.</p>

<p>The digital currency expert believes the future lies in convergence between crypto and traditional finance, between accessibility and compliance. Acwires allows users to buy and sell crypto with their credit card, regardless of jurisdiction and currency, and previously he helped to build Diginex, which became the first crypto exchange to list on Nasdaq.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Regulatory Clarity</h3>



<p>He is convinced that as regulatory clarity improves and infrastructure evolves, crypto will become part of everyday commerce. “We are already seeing a shift as mainstream payment companies and banks have started working closely with crypto service providers,” he notes.</p>

<p>As Hung shares, blockchain transactions are inherently transparent – but pseudonymous. “The transaction is visible, but the identity behind a wallet isn’t public unless disclosed,” he says. “We still have to rely on traditional KYC [Know Your Customer] procedures to attach a wallet to the actual buyer’s identity.” He adds that there are forensics firms able to trace a wallet’s previous transactions to identify if it has been associated with suspicious activities.</p>

<p>Some financial commentators have suggested it is possible to evade a blockchain’s transparency through crypto mixers. Hung says leading platforms and regulated payment providers screen for such activity, and the focus now is on building infrastructure that is compliant with anti-money laundering standards through traditional KYC, and also KYT (Know Your Token) policies.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Risks and Rewards</h3>



<p>Sam Kima, Senior Vice-President of First Gold, believes Sotheby’s and Christie’s adoption of cryptocurrency is a calculated bet to future-proof its business, attract crypto-rich collectors, and streamline transactions. By accepting crypto taps, the auction houses connect with a new class of wealthy buyers who prefer transacting in digital assets rather than liquidating them for fiat currency – which, notes Kima, can trigger tax events. He also suggests that some buyers prefer the pseudonymous nature of crypto for discreet transactions, especially in high-profile sales.</p>

<p>Regarding the potential risks and challenges of transactions made in virtual currency, Kima warns: “Crypto prices can swing dramatically, creating uncertainty for both buyers and sellers. Some cryptocurrencies, for example Bitcoin, have high energy consumption, clashing with sustainability goals.” In addition, he foresees that regulatory uncertainty could complicate compliance.</p>

<p>“Cryptocurrency in auctions is a natural evolution, aligning with digital finance trends; however, its long-term success depends on stablecoins [pegged to another asset to mitigate volatility] and clearer regulations,” he says. “If managed wisely, it could democratise art investing, but risks remain.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Trust Issues</h3>



<p>According to Wojtek Paczos, Senior Lecturer in Economics at Cardiff University, cryptocurrencies payment systems operate on the basis of a fundamental mistrust. He says: “Nobody trusts anyone, so the record of transactions must be decentralised: it is kept in millions of copies all over the internet in a so-called ‘ledger’. The fact that it’s decentralised makes it economically inefficient.”</p>

<p>In his view, for crypto to become a viable means of payment like a standard currency, it must be a unit of account, a store of value, and a medium of exchange. “Cryptocurrencies fail badly across all three [of these qualifying] tests: nobody quotes prices in bitcoins, the set of goods purchasable with bitcoin is severely limited, and the fluctuations in value against traditional currencies render bitcoin an unstable store of value.”</p>

<p>He believes crypto is highly volatile because it is built on this basis of mistrust and lacks a safety net to prop up its demand, such as by paying taxes via the currency.  “In cryptocurrencies, the demand might simply disappear one day, and there is no formal backstop,” he says.</p>

<p>The image of crypto has undoubtedly been tarnished by incidents of scamming and hacking. Coinbase, one of the world’s biggest cryptocurrency exchanges, was hit by a cyberattack last month that is likely to cost it as much as US$400 million. Reportedly, the company refused to pay a bribe demanded by the hackers and has promised to reimburse every client who got scammed.</p>

<p>Bill Lee, Chief Technology Officer of Web3 pioneer DualMint says the promise of crypto technology has been undermined by a flood of scams, rug pulls and exploitative projects. “To combat this, both the industry and regulators are stepping up,” he shares. </p>

<p>DualMint emerged as a response to fundamental issues within the current digital ecosystem like ownership, control and transparency.  Offering some measure of reassurance, Lee says: “Within the space, there’s a growing emphasis on auditing, code transparency and self-regulatory standards, such as those promoted by organisations like the Blockchain Association and [blockchain analytics firm] Chainalysis.”</p>

<p>Once a shy girl who devoted much of her time to her beloved horse, Mikey Madison is now riding the wave of Hollywood success. While labelling herself an introvert, the <em>Anora</em> star enjoys occupying the headspace of extroverts. “If I play these [extreme] characters, then I’m going to get to experience so much life and living through them. It wasn’t until she was 14 that her head was turned toward acting. “I loved the ritual of getting to the barn and taking care of my horse, but it’s kind of an isolating sport,” she says of horse riding. “I felt called in another direction.”</p>

<p>Having enrolled in acting classes, she made the pivotal decision to focus on acting full-time, forgoing college to immerse herself in auditions. It was then that her upbringing in Los Angeles, amid a backdrop of aspiring artists and established stars, provided her with a unique perspective on the entertainment world.</p>

She shone among a large ensemble cast which included big names like Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, playing the small but pivotal role of Susan ‘Sadie’ Atkins, one of Charles Manson’s notorious ‘family’ who murdered actress Sharon Tate and four others on 9 August 1969. Praised by critics for her authenticity and emotional depth, the young actor demonstrated her versatility and positioned herself as a new talent to watch.</p>

<p>The main takeaway for Madison herself, though, was the opportunity to be directed by one of her heroes. “It was a dream come true,” she exclaims of working with Tarantino. “It was completely unbelievable and the greatest entry into film for me. But it was also, ‘OK, well, f***, I just worked with my hero at 19. What am I going to do now?’”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Brooklyn Bound</h3>



<p>Nabbing the titular role in the Palme d’Or and Oscar triumph <em>Anora</em> (2024) was her answer. In fact, she didn’t even have to audition for the part since writer-director-producer-editor Sean Baker had spotted her in <em>Scream</em> (2022), the fifth instalment of the iconic slasher series, and recalled her work in <em>Once Upon a Time in Hollywood</em>. He wrote this hard-edged, modern American romance centring on a bold, brassy stripper-cum-occasional sex worker with Madison in mind.</p>

<p>In turn, the actor threw herself into the role, casting off her inner California girl. Displaying her strong work ethic and thirst for perfection, she visited strip clubs, learnt pole dancing and basic Russian, and even lived in Brighton Beach for a month to acquire a thick Brooklyn accent.</p>

<p>As she collected a cache of trophies for <em>Anora</em>, Madison dedicated them to the women who earn their living as sex workers. “I’ve made friends who are dancers,” she relates. “I wanted every aspect of Ani’s career and what she does to be realistic – but also [to show] that’s not her entire life; that’s just her job. I didn’t want [her line of work] to be sensationalised or dramatised in a negative way. I just wanted it to be what it was.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Slow &amp; Shy</h3>



<p>She says of the character: “[Ani’s] very boisterous and scrappy and has so much attitude. And she has this incredible fighting spirit that I really admire, and I don’t think that’s me at all. In terms of energy, I’m a lower-energy person. I just move through the world in a slower manner.” A rare celebrity who eschews social media and doesn’t like to talk about herself, the actor prefers to live “in her own little world”.</p>

<p>Madison has been open about her struggles with shyness and social difficulties as a child, when she found solace spending time with animals. She encourages others to prioritise their mental wellbeing, reinforcing her commitment to authenticity.</p>



<p>As a relatively inexperienced actor, she has been inspired by the women who have paved the way in Hollywood. She acknowledges the importance of representation in film and television, advocating for diverse stories and complex characters. Her passion for storytelling aligns with her desire to contribute meaningfully to the industry.</p>

<p>“I would like to see more men in power being outspoken about women’s issues in Hollywood… the kind of world we live in, men are in a position of power – actors, producers, directors. They should be uplifting women. I think that should be a man’s role,” she says.</p>

<p>A recent survey has shed positive light on Hong Kong’s efforts to lure more tourists and the high levels of public awareness and engagement generated by mega events. Large-scale attractions are seen as an important plank in the drive to attract overseas visitors willing to spend big in the local economy.</p>

<p>March 2025 was designated a ‘Super’ month by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) in an initiative designed to boost the city’s allure. The ‘Super March’ campaign crystallised and capitalised upon a series of major events with international pulling power that were happening that month, including the opening of Kai Tak Sports Park, the Hong Kong Sevens rugby tournament, Art Basel Hong Kong, Art Central and pop culture festival ComplexCon.</p>

<p>A variety of methods, from websites and social media to online and outdoor advertising, were used to draw tourists into Hong Kong to experience these cultural and sporting highlights and visit new landmarks. A dedicated webpage was set up to promote the campaign, and the HKTB partnered with 40 key opinion leaders and celebrities, who shared first-hand enjoyment of the events on their social-media platforms, resulting in a reported audience reach of more than 10 million followers.</p>

<p>Super March was the first showcase of seasonal themes involving the strategic bundling of mega events and experiences that define Hong Kong – the likes of gastronomy, arts and culture, festivals, horse racing and sports, nature and outdoor activities, and the giant pandas – for promotions in visitor source markets. It was implemented “so that visitors and travel trade partners [could] have ample time to make travel or sales plans,” stated a HKTB spokesperson.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Surveying Sentiment</h3>



<p>Following Super March, a survey conducted by leading data-driven insights provider MDRi offered a comprehensive understanding of how these events were perceived and experienced by the local community. It focused on key indicators including event awareness, event participants and profiling, likelihood to recommend, and areas of improvement. The effectiveness of brand sponsorship, and sentiment on the Hong Kong economy, the future, and future event preferences were also analysed. The report was based on a “robust” survey sample size of 1,000 respondents from the general public.</p>

<p>Notable among the survey findings was the invigorating impact of the Super March events on the Hong Kong economy. “A significant 72% of respondents expressed agreement that these events would have a positive effect on the local economy,” says Simon Tye, CEO of MDRi. “This finding underscores the optimism and recognition among the public regarding the economic benefits that these March events can potentially bring to Hong Kong.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Sucking in Tourists</h3>



<p>Driven by this series of mega events, Hong Kong successfully attracted large numbers of visitors in March. The total of 3.8 million – including more than a million non-mainland visitors – represented a year-on-year increase of 12%, according to HKTB figures.</p>

<p>“Inbound visitors accounted for more than 50%, 40% and 25% respectively for major events such as Art Basel Hong Kong, Hong Kong Sevens and Art Central,” noted the HKTB. “Participants of ComplexCon also grew by 16% compared to last year, with a total sales of HK$87 million in the event.”</p>

<p>The general economy and the hotel sector also received a boost. “In terms of economic activities, various sectors reported an extra revenue of 15-30% in March. According to the hotel industry, the occupancy rate of hotels in peak districts [was] close to 90%.”</p>

<p>The standout performer among the month’s mega events was the Hong Kong Sevens, reaching an “impressive” 89% awareness among the Hong Kong population, according to the Super March feedback. About 90% of attendees rated their experience positively and expressed strong interest in future participation. Additionally, 89% knew that Cathay and HSBC sponsored the event.</p>

<p>In another boon for this year’s Hong Kong Sevens, it became the first major event held at Kai Tak Stadium, the new, state-of-the-art sports and entertainment facility designed by Populous, a global architectural firm specialising in arenas. “With a storied history dating back to 1976, this iconic event has woven itself into the collective memory of Hong Kong locals,” says Tye, noting that the new venue and facilities contributed positively to the event’s overall evaluation.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Statement Stadium</h3>



<p>Richard Breslin, Senior Principal of Populous and the project’s lead architect, says Hong Kong is putting itself on the world stage as a major centre of sport, art and entertainment tourism. “Seeing the 50,000-seat Kai Tak Stadium packed full of fans from all over the world during the three days of the Rugby Sevens is a real statement from Hong Kong to Asia and the rest of the world that the city is as vibrant and busy as ever,” he enthuses.</p>

<p>“Kai Tak Sports Park is one of the world’s most integrated sports and entertainment precincts. It’s a city-shaping asset and having the Hong Kong Sevens here brought the event to the city and the city to the world.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Not All Right on the Night</h3>



<p>The draw of Kai Tak Stadium is highlighted by the fact that tickets placed on general sale for next month’s Hong Kong Football Festival were snapped up within hours. Numerous sell-out performances, including by British group Coldplay and Cantopop star Nicholas Tse, also attest to the new venue’s magnetic appeal.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, more than 200 complaints were lodged with the city’s consumer watchdog after the Coldplay concert, mainly concerning obstructed views. Similar complaints followed Tse’s show. Tye says such incidents raise valid issues about seating arrangements.</p>

<p>Another teething problem concerned parking at the stadium. Amrit Sethi, Director of local travel agency Excella Travel, helped facilitate the itinerary of a group of visitors from Mongolia who were “super excited” to be in Hong Kong for Coldplay. “I wove in some other fun activities such as horse racing, city sightseeing and an optional visit to a theme park,” she says. “Some were diehard fans, who even got tattoos done prior to flying over.”</p>

<p>Sethi states that the group had difficulty returning to their coach after the concert, as the vehicle had been unable to park in the intended area close to the stadium. “They finally did find the driver with real-time location share, but they had to walk quite a distance away.”</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Art of Drawing Crowds</h3>



<p>Amid all the plus points of its findings, the MDRi survey did uncover what might be considered a weakness in marketing Hong Kong mega events to the home crowd. Other than the Hong Kong Sevens, less than half of the sample population were aware of the Super March attractions – only 40% of respondents knew about Art Basel, while just 26% and 21% were cognisant of Art Central and ComplexCon respectively. However, in all cases the overwhelming number of attendees viewed their experience positively.</p>

<p>Tye attributes the lower awareness to the nature of these events, which are primarily focused on art, culture and niche interests and thus may appeal to a smaller segment of the public. He says the success of Art Basel reinforces Hong Kong’s global reputation as a major art centre alongside New York, London and Paris. Interestingly, a profile of event attendees revealed that Art Basel participants had the highest liquid assets (a total of HK$2.74 million).</p>

<p>Regarding areas of improvement for Art Basel, Tye points to a suggestion by respondents that pre-events should be hosted to introduce the art on show. This might “help build anticipation, generate interest and provide insights into the uniqueness and attractions of the artworks”, he says.</p>

<p>He believes Art Central serves as a valuable complement to Art Basel by offering a high-exposure platform for emerging artists from the local and Asian art scenes. As for ComplexCon, he suggests its ability to resonate with a younger generation speaks to its relevance in contemporary pop culture and consumer trends.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Big Picture</h3>



<p>Ultimately, the successful experiences of Super March not only reveal long-term implications for the arts, culture, sports and entertainment sectors but also reflect a vibrant cultural identity within the city. “This success could potentially attract more diverse events, promote local talent and stimulate creative industries, which may have lasting positive effects on Hong Kong’s cultural landscape,” says Tye.</p>

<p>While Super March focused on mega sporting, art and cultural events, the HKTB is looking to cast the net wider in the future. The travel body suggests that staging international events like conventions and exhibitions can strengthen Hong Kong’s status and influence in different areas, such as financial and medical services, logistics, science and technology.</p>

The art market in Hong Kong and mainland China is outperforming other regions, and significantly for its future buoyancy, is diversifying to embrace younger collectors.</p>

<p>Two recently published reports highlight the mixed fortunes of players in the art world. <em>The Art Basel and UBS Global Art Market Report 2025</em> points to a 12% decrease in global art market sales amid a challenging economic environment. Research indicates a more reserved buying and selling environment at the high end of the market, but more positively the broader landscape remains dynamic. Resilience in lower-priced segments is fostering a more diverse market ecosystem.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On a regional level, indicators for the Asian art scene are encouraging. The newly launched <em>Mishcon de Reya x ArtTactic – China Art Market Report 2025</em> speaks of a “transformative” period for the art market here, as Hong Kong and mainland China become established as a prominent global art centre. It reveals that the global market share for sales of Modern and Contemporary Art in China including Hong Kong has doubled over the last decade, solidifying the country’s position as a key art hub. Having leapt from 7% market share in 2015 to 14% last year, China is now the third-largest art market globally. Furthermore, Hong Kong’s growth rate as an auction centre for Modern and Contemporary Art over the past 10 years has surpassed that of its rivals, New York and London.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

Strong demand for works by Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh has been a major driver, as their market appeal continues to grow among collectors in the region.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Asians have dominated the lists of top 10 artists selling for over US$1 million in the last decade, especially Chinese émigrés and Japanese artists. This high standing is driven by global recognition through museum exhibitions and strong auction results in the key markets of New York, London, Paris and Hong Kong, reveals Karas. Their appeal to both international and Asian collectors has reinforced their prominence at the top of the market.</p>

<p>Some exhibitors at Art Basel Hong Kong in March commented on a strong interest in Chinese artists among fairgoers. “I’m particularly encouraged by the interest in Zhu Jinshi, a true pioneer of Chinese abstraction,” said Pearl Lam, who owns galleries in Hong Kong and Shanghai. She also noticed growing visitor curiosity for the works of Su Xiaobai.</p>

<p>However, she issued a word of warning: “Let’s be real: this is a challenging time for Chinese artists on the global stage. We’re facing Trump-era tariffs and a climate that complicates the promotion of Chinese art.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Demand for diversity</h3>



<p>Dawn Zhu, Director for Asia at international gallery Thaddaeus Ropac, noted that those who once focused primarily on Chinese or Asian contemporary art are increasingly interested in Western contemporary art, reflecting a quest to diversify collections. <p>According to Levent Özmen, Senior Gallery Director of Istanbul-based Dirimart, oil on canvas paintings, particularly those by the new generation of upcoming artists, are catching the eye of many collectors. He opined that business at Art Basel Hong Kong has yet to return to the optimism of pre-Covid times, but he drew positives from the experience, saying: “We have always perceived our presence at the fair as a long-term project and value networking over sales.”</p>

<p>Gallerist Melle Hendrikse, who founded C-Space (now known as CLC Gallery Venture) in the Caochangdi Art District of Beijing in 2008, believes further growth in China’s burgeoning art market is being driven by new, and especially young, collectors. “We especially had very strong interest in the works by Zhang Shujian and Wang Xuan,” said Hendrikse of Art Basel Hong Kong, where he showcased predominately Chinese artists alongside some international names.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Garth Grierson, founder of Hong Kong-based Art Curators Hub, concurs. “There are younger buyers and collectors coming into the market, which is very encouraging for the future of art,” he says, adding that Asian art is taking the lead in Asia as the market recovers.</p>

<p>The shift to youth noted by these gallerists is borne out by the China Art Market Report. Its research shows that nearly 40% of bidders and buyers in Asia are from the Millennial and Gen Z age groups, whose growing interest in art equates to a form of personal expression as well as an investment. “The auction market is increasingly driven by a younger demographic, which should secure its future growth and longevity,” says Karas. “As the global wealth transfer accelerates, this demographic is set to play a pivotal role in driving demand and market dynamics.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Affordable icons</h3>



<p>The report also highlights a notable increase in sales volume over 2023 and 2024 in the sub-US$50,000 sector, where young contemporary artists represent 26.9% of lots sold. “The interest in younger artists is a likely reflection of more demand from NextGen collectors who are collecting artists from their generation,” adds Karas.</p>

<p>Renowned Asian artists such as Zao Wou-Ki and Sanyu, as well as international icons such as Pablo Picasso, also featured in auction sales at the lower end of the market. “It’s important for new and younger collectors to understand that the global art market and established (blue-chip) artists are accessible through multiple price points, from multimillion-dollar artworks to affordable options such as works on paper or limited editions and prints,” says Karas.&nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Women artists on the verge</h3>



<p>Diversification, which is a key catalyst for growth in the Hong Kong and Mainland China Modern and Contemporary Art market, extends to an increasing demand for works by women artists. At auction in Hong Kong, the number of women artists featured has tripled in the past six years, from 79 in 2019 to 231 in 2024. As Karas notes, there has been a significant global shift – including in Asia – towards greater inclusivity and gender diversity in the art market and the broader art world.</p>

<p>Furthermore, Asian and Chinese artists dominate this emerging section of the Hong Kong and mainland China market, with seven out of the top 10 women artists by sales value hailing from the region. “The rising stocks of women artists from Asia could be at least partially owed to the trend of museums hosting retrospective shows on women artists from the region,” explains Karas. “Examples include the Yayoi Kusama show at M+ in 2022-23, and two at London’s Tate Modern – Anicka Yi in 2021-22, and Yoko Ono in 2024.” Karas also reveals a broader trend of expanding art markets throughout Asia, reflected in the development of new art infrastructure and events in other cities in China and in South Asia, and driven by economic growth, wealth accumulation and a new generation of collectors.&nbsp;</p>


Artful Flush of Youth: Younger and wealthier collectors are fuelling China’s rapidly rising art market, elevating its global importance


<p>As generative artificial-intelligence tools from Grammarly to ChatGPT grab the popular imagination, the world’s creatives feel increasingly marginalised, fearful of their ability to eke out a living in the all too near future. Generative AI sifts through human-generated content – texts, sounds, images and videos – to train its models to compose music, or create a painting, or generate a TV advert. Scraping through such data, known as text and data mining (TDM), is often without the consent of the content owners.</p>

<p>Protests against the use of AI to create new forms of artistic output without recompense or the consent of the original creators rage on around the globe. A protest album called <em>Is This What We Want?</em> was released earlier this year in response to proposed changes in UK copyright law that would mean AI developers could train their models using material available on the internet unless those holding the rights to this content specifically elected to opt out of providing permission.</p>

<p>In the art world, an Augmented Intelligence auction held in New York this spring also caused a furore. Prior to the sale, an open letter signed by thousands of artists called for its cancellation, decrying the “mass theft” of human artists’ work by AI companies.</p>

<p>The vexatious issue is underscored by the fact that many governments are keen to promote a thriving ecosystem for both tech firms and artistic creators, even though myriad legal and ethical considerations swirl around the promotion of this nascent technology.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Composer protection</h3>



<p>Due to AI’s increasing influence in various sectors, the Hong Kong government launched a public consultation last year on the enhancement of the Copyright Ordinance to reflect AI technology development. In its submission to the consultation paper, the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong (Cash) – which manages the copyright of musical works for more than three million members locally and from affiliated societies overseas – said copyright protection should not only be provided to the “arranger” of the works but also extend to the author or owner of the underlying work. Like the protesters in the UK, it believes an opt-out model proposed by the government unfairly shifts the burden to the copyright owner who has to take an active step to safeguard their rights.</p>

<p>Instead, Cash proposes the implementation of an opt-in system, arguing that “the default position should be … it is illegal to use any music without permission, unless the author or the composer has expressed an intention to sell their rights to the tech company.” In their view, when there is commercial use of copyrighted material for TDM purposes, the owners of the work should be remunerated, and this remuneration should be based on licensing arrangements between the owners and the AI companies.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Legal conundrum</h3>



<p>Hong Kong-based lawyer Ellie Patel, the founder and CEO of Re-think Legal, believes the generative AI issue is exacerbated by the legal framework in most jurisdictions lagging behind modern technological developments. “Governments are now scrambling to put in place laws to govern the creation and use of AI, but this is just the start of the process,” she says. “Ultimately, it’s only when these laws are interpreted and tested by the courts, and harmonised on an international level that real certainty regarding rights and obligations will be established.”</p>

<p>Patel is torn on the subject of “fair use” exemptions to train AI models. These allow for use of content without the threat of copyright infringement in certain circumstances, such as education and news reporting. As a trademark and intellectual property expert, she has clients who are creators and others who are in the tech industry.</p>

<p>She supports the development of AI, viewing it as an increasingly important public and corporate tool. “That said, creators also need protection and, in the main, should be rewarded for their contribution,” she notes. “It is all about striking a balance between the two – but striking that balance is no mean feat.”</p>

<p>Jonathan Chu, an Intellectual Property Partner at CMS in Hong Kong, warns that if there are too many restrictions on the use of copyright works for training AI, it will hamper innovation, and jurisdictions with the most stringent laws on AI development will be left behind. He urges greater clarity on the issue.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Remixing the past</h3>



<p>Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Professor Andrew Horner, whose primary research interests are music synthesis and timbre, sees generative AI as the exciting new “kid on the creativity block” shaking up the artistic landscape. He has no qualms about generative AI learning from the “rich tapestry of existing content – music, literature, visual art and more”.</p>

<p>He states that throughout history, artists have drawn inspiration from each other’s creations. “A classic example in music is Miles Davis paying tribute to Stravinsky’s <em>The Rite of Spring</em>,” he says. “In this sense, generative AI is simply carrying forward this vibrant legacy. No creator operates in a vacuum; they are always influenced by the world around them and the inspirations that strike their fancy.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Two disco songwriters recently lost a legal case alleging that Dua Lipa copied her single <em>Levitating</em> from their tracks, and Horner believes this highlights the beautiful – and sometimes tricky – dance of creativity. “It’s only natural for songwriters to mix and remix elements from others’ work, adding their own unique flair,” he insists. “After all, if you create something that inspires, it’s likely others will want to take that spark and run with it.”</p>

<p>For him, the crux of the matter is whether the output of generative AI models resonates with us and inspires meaningful experiences. “It’s an exhilarating time for creativity, making it easier than ever to play with sounds and forge new musical landscapes,” he says. “There are so many ways to pay tribute to a song: you can cover it, create a mashup that fuses it with another track, or compose something entirely fresh that reflects your personal take on it. It’s all part of the vibrant tapestry of music-making.”</p>

<p>Horner suggests the creative lineage of a piece should be honoured by giving a shout-out to the artist or artists who influenced it. Musician David Robinson, who is paid royalties for a book and tape he created, is strongly in favour of AI as a tool to enhance the creative process, but believes musicians should be compensated if AI uses their material.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Pushing art forward</h3>



<p>Art-world pioneers including Refik Anadol, Sougwen Chung, Sander Coers, Anna Ridler and Victor Wong have used AI to expand artistic possibilities, blending human intuition with machine-generated aesthetics. Karen Sanig, who founded Art Law at Mishcon de Reya, says that for some artists, AI is less a threat than a transformative tool, deeply integrated into their creative processes in sophisticated ways. However, she is concerned that AI systems which scrape vast datasets of artworks en masse, and without consent, deny artists control over how their work is used or reproduced.</p>

<p>AI-generated imitations could also both damage the integrity of a work of art and dilute an artist’s reputation, hence conversations about moral rights (such as the right to attribution, or the protection of a work’s integrity), passing off are vital alongside copyright considerations.</p>

<p>“Legislators face a daunting challenge – not only must they crystallise a formula to regulate a technology that evolves daily, they must reconcile AI’s data-driven mechanics with intellectual property frameworks built largely for human authorship,” notes Sanig.</p>

<p>Hong Kong-based entrepreneur Matey Yordanov of Antei AI Development Hub says he has developed an imperceptible ‘mask’ technology that adds an invisible layer to any type of media, leading to the corruption of the AI training output if protected files are used. “This not only safeguards the media from being copied, but also prevents deepfakes and impersonation of artists, which is becoming increasingly more critical with the development of AI,” he affirms.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Yellow wales</h3>



<p>The daffodil has been the symbol of national identity in Wales since the 19th century, and was especially visible in the time of David Lloyd George, the only Welsh Prime Minister of the UK (1916-22). The politician would often go to events wearing a daffodil, especially around 1 March, which is St David’s Day, the National Day of Wales. He also wrote newspaper articles promoting the daffodil and detailing why the yellow bloom should be used to unite the country.</p>

<p>A spokesperson for the National Museum of Wales relates in a BBC podcast why the daffodil, the bright trumpet of spring in many countries, became such an important symbol for Wales as the former principality sought to retain its identity in the 1800s: “There was a real sense of urgency that [Welsh] histories and culture were going to be lost and because of this desperation, a lot of what was told and written was actually invented. The daffodil became one of the symbols that was invented as a signifier of Welshness and what made Wales different to England and other countries of the United Kingdom.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Leek out</h3>



<p>It was the leek which had been the national emblem of Wales for hundreds of years. Indeed, legend has it that David, the patron saint of Wales, ordered his soldiers to identify themselves in a sixth-century battle against the Saxons – which happened to take place in a leek field – by wearing the plant on their helmets. The leek and the daffodil in the Welsh language share the name ‘cenhinen’ – the daffodil is ‘cenhinen pedr’, Peter’s leek in Welsh. The daffodil emerged the stronger from this semantic confusion as a more potent symbol of Welsh identity.</p>

<p>The leek was given short shrift in the 19th-century cultural revival in Wales, and according to the National Museum of Wales spokesperson, by 1858 the daffodil had superseded it as the national symbol. She notes the existence in the museum of a triple harp, made in that year by Bassett Jones, with a daffodil carving, signifying the importance of the flower to the Welsh people. Another similarly extravagant harp from Jones dated 10 years earlier has no sign of a daffodil.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Narcissist tendencies</h3>



<p>The beauty and vanity associated with daffodils – as mentioned, Lloyd George would regularly pin one on his button hole – is fitting as the Latin name for daffodil is narcissus. In Greek mythology, Narcissus fell in love with his own reflection and pined away, while Persephone, the queen of the underworld, found the daffodil more beautiful than any bloom she had ever seen. They are currently harvested in the Welsh mountains for galantamine, a compound in the bulb used in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.</p>

<p>Many botanists believe Spain was the epicentre of the genus narcissist and from there it spread along the Mediterranean and beyond, although there are question marks surrounding the route of travel. Narcissus tasseta, known as the Chinese sacred lily but actually a type of daffodil, symbolises good fortune in China, and is commonly used in New Year celebrations. The Japanese believe the daffodil brings joy and mirth.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Cherry and gold</h3>



<p>While Japan has no official national flower, the sakura, or cherry blossom, is a cultural phenomenon in the country. Symbolising the transient nature of life, its fleeting beauty is celebrated annually with hanami (flower-viewing) festivals, where families gather under blooming trees to appreciate the petals’ momentary splendour.</p>

<p>The chrysanthemum is the other important flower in Japan. Derived from the Greek name, krus anthemon, meaning ‘gold flower’, it symbolises longevity and rejuvenation; a 16-petalled chrysanthemum is the Japanese imperial crest.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Name of the rose</h3>



<p>Roses have been the focus of song, literature, art and legend for centuries across many cultures. The woody perennial’s powerful symbolism perhaps lies in its mutability – it has been a signifier of everything from sex to socialism, and romance to religious belief. It inspired some remarkable Persian poetry and even the first punk rock single in the UK – New Rose (1976) by The Damned.</p>

<p>Shakespeare penned the verse “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet” in Romeo and Juliet, while Othello, in his murderous rage, cries: “When I have plucked the rose, I cannot give it vital growth again: It needs must whither, I’ll smell thee on the tree.”</p>

<p>Although the rose is often associated with England, it is a truly global flower. Most of the cultivated roses in England originate from a handful of wild species, with varietals coming from ancient gardens in China, Turkey and Persia, and their background is one of Byzantine complexity. Interbreeding of roses has added more than 80 hybrids into the British mix, creating a thicket of thorny identification problems.</p>

<p>In the magnificent David Austin Rose Gardens in the heart of the Shropshire countryside, the midsummer air is heavy with the scent of nearly 800 varieties of roses in bloom, many with rich, luscious, bowl-shaped blossoms. Amid crowds thronging to see beds of exotic roses of all shapes, textures, hues and scents, its managing director David Austin Jr told the BBC: “Nobody can really track down – as far as I know – how we suddenly got from the single-flowered simple rose to these beautiful multi-petalled roses. So, it is a little bit of a mystery!”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">English emblem</h3>



<p>England’s floral badge is the Tudor rose, a plant which does not exist but represents the amalgamation of two English houses – Lancaster and York – following the so-called Wars of the Roses in the 15th century. Five white inner petals and five red outer petals make up the bright red floral emblem that adorns the England team sports shirts, British coins and magnificent buildings such as Hampton Court Palace in London.</p>

<p>Jennifer Potter, author of The Rose: A True History, believes the concept of the Tudor rose was one of the great political inventions. “It emerged out of massively successful Tudor spin doctoring,” she commented. “The so-called Wars of the Roses were actually no such thing, or at least they weren’t fought under the banner or the emblem of roses.”</p>

<p>The rose was declared the national flower of the United States in 1986, when Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation in the White House Rose Garden. The states within the United States, though, have their own separate flowers and emblems.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tulip mania</h3>



<p>Despite originating in Turkey, it was Holland that became the global trading hub of the tulip in the 17th century, and ‘tulip mania’ took hold following frenzied trading. Rare varieties were sold over and over again even before they had even flowered, and the subsequent implosion was probably the first recorded stock-market crash.</p>

In addition to acting from the age of six, he married his Nowhere Boy director Sam Taylor-Wood in 2012 at just 22 and had children at a young age. His wife is 24 years his senior, and the couple adopted a shared surname of Taylor-Johnson.</p>

<p>Reflecting on (as it turned out) a well-spent youth, he recalls his travels with his mother to London from their Wycombe home – a 60-mile round trip – to attend countless auditions. “It wasn’t easy. Sometimes I’d audition twice a day five days a week, up and down London. My mum would take me to Amersham.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Quite the Character</h3>



<p>Taylor-Johnson has consistently sought out diverse and challenging roles, a strategy that has played a pivotal role in shaping his versatile on-screen persona. “I’m not interested in playing the same type of character over and over again,” he has said. “I want to constantly challenge myself and explore new avenues of storytelling.”</p>

Murnau silent horror masterpiece Nosferatu with Bill Skarsgård, who plays the titular vampire. On the horizon too is the lead role in the Marvel superhero instalment Kraven the Hunter. Next year there will be Fuze, a heist thriller from Hell or High Water director David Mackenzie, and 28 Years Later, Danny Boyle’s post-apocalyptic sequel.</p>

<p>At time of writing, Taylor-Johnson neither confirms nor denies the Bond rumour. “I don’t feel like I need to have a future drawn out for me,” he says. “It’s the best when you sometimes lose all inhibitions completely, and you feel like you’re dangling there, and the director has sort of got one finger on the back of your shirt, so you don’t fall. <p>The age-old traditions of Chinese medicine have continued to thrive in Hong Kong, standing as a testament to the enduring wisdom of holistic healing practices. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in Hong Kong has long been regarded as a reliable and effective approach to maintaining overall health and treating a wide range of ailments. </p>

<p>One of the key advantages of Chinese medicine is its emphasis on preventive care and the promotion of overall well-being. Practices like acupuncture, tai chi and herbal therapy seek to strengthen the body’s natural defences and increase resilience to disease. This stands in contrast to the Western medical model, which often relies on reactive measures and the use of prescription drugs to manage symptoms.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Herbal Hospital</h3>



<p>The opening of the Chinese Medicine Hospital, Hong Kong’s first TCM hospital, in Pak Shing Kok, Tseung Kwan O, in late 2025 is slated to serve as a showcase for international attempts to integrate Western and traditional practices. “This is a Chinese medicine hospital, but there will be a number of Western medicine examination facilities,” says its CEO, Professor Bian Zhaoxiang, a renowned authority in traditional Chinese medicine. </p>

<p>The government-funded hospital will have a total of 400 beds – including 250 in inpatient wards, 90 in day wards, 40 in paediatric wards, and 20 in the clinical trial and research centre. The highly anticipated opening of its Chinese medicine inpatient wards will mark “the first time in Hong Kong’s history that there will be such services,” notes Bian. Some 65 per cent of the new hospital’s services will be subsidised by the government, with the remainder provided by the private sector. Currently, private practitioners provide 95 per cent of TCM services in the city.</p>

<p>“Hong Kong’s Chinese medicine sector should seize the opportunity to capitalise on our characteristics and strengths &#8230; to demonstrate the value of traditional Chinese medicine and the collaboration between Chinese and Western medicine to the world,” says Lo Chung-mau, Hong Kong’s Secretary for Health.</p>

<p>A cooperation agreement between the upcoming facility and the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine has been also inked, covering areas like talent exchange, database setup and the creation of a network for scientific research. Lo declares that Chinese medicine in Hong Kong will reach “new heights” as a result of the partnership with the state-run Guangdong hospital. “With the rich experience and technology sharing from the [Guangdong hospital], I believe that the Chinese Medicine Hospital of Hong Kong will be able to launch its services smoothly,” he noted at the signing ceremony in January.&nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Holistic Endeavour</h3>



<p>While Western medicine has made remarkable advancements in the fields of diagnostics, surgical procedures and pharmaceutical interventions, it is often criticised for its narrow focus on treating specific symptoms or conditions. In contrast, Chinese medicine takes a more holistic approach, viewing the body as an interconnected system and seeking to restore balance and harmony.</p>

<p>Dr Arthur Lau Chun-wing, the Chinese Medicine Hospital’s Deputy Chief Executive in Western Medicine, anticipates that the new facility will capitalise on the advantages of the two types of treatment. “I hope we can formulate standards that can serve as the blueprint for the world to follow and reference,” he says.</p>

<p>China’s main medical practices have historically been acupuncturing and herbal therapy. Acupuncture is regarded as a yang therapy, and for more persistent problems, yin herbal medicine is used in addition. Arguably the most advanced in the world, the Chinese herbal system encompasses thousands of recipes and plants. The majority of herbs are used in combinations, with eight or more different plants often combined to provide a synergistic cure. Additionally, animal parts are frequently included in medicinal formulae. Two examples to treat asthma are dried caterpillar fungus and gecko tails. A highly sought-after and costly tonic in Hong Kong is created from the saliva of the swiftlet bird.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Chinese vs Western</h3>



<p>Studies have demonstrated the efficacy of certain Chinese medicine practices in treating conditions such as chronic pain, digestive disorders and even certain types of cancer. However, the reliability and scientific evidence behind Chinese medicine remains a subject of ongoing discussion, with some Western medical professionals expressing scepticism about the lack of standardised clinical trials and the potential for inconsistent quality control.</p>

<p>Dr Leung Ting-hung, the former Director of the Centre for Health Protection in Hong Kong, has said: “Chinese medicine can complement conventional Western treatments, but patients should be cautious of unsubstantiated claims. The safety and quality of Chinese medicine products require more regulation and oversight.”</p>

<p>The pros of TCM in Hong Kong include its long-standing tradition, its holistic approach to health, and its potential effectiveness in treating certain conditions. Many patients appreciate the natural and non-invasive nature of Chinese medicine treatments, as well as the emphasis on maintaining balance and harmony within the body. On the downside, doubters cite the lack of standardised quality control, and the potential for inconsistent or unreliable results and adverse reactions with Western medications. Additionally, some Chinese medicine practices, such as the use of endangered animal parts, have raised ethical concerns.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Future Tradition</h3>



<p>Cheung Wai-lun, the Hong Kong Health Bureau’s Project Director for the Chinese Medicine Hospital, says officials want to coordinate and promote the quality development of Chinese medicine. “Besides local development of the sector, we hope to cooperate with the motherland’s development plans in this area. That is to use Hong Kong as a platform – like a display window – to showcase to the world how Chinese medicine can be applied.”</p>

Healing Heritage: With TCM wards and Western diagnostics, Hong Kong can break through borders as a Chinese medicine frontier 


<p>From the late 15th century when the Western colonial powers held sway over vast swathes of the world, hordes of precious artefacts were seized as spoils of war or amassed in other ways. Many were sold privately and larger numbers still ended up in the great encyclopaedic museums of Europe.</p>

<p>As territories gained their independence following the Second World, they began to voice a desire for the return of cultural treasures that had been looted, purchased or gifted. Arguments about the legitimate ownership of such heritage pieces are long and complex, but in recent years Western governments and institutions have begun to heed a groundswell of public opinion and make accommodations for some to head back to their original home.</p>

<p>In the UK, the issue is complicated by a law that prohibits national museums from permanently handing over items in their collections. To circumvent this legal hurdle and find common ground, a collaborative approach is required.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Contested marbles</h3>



<p>It was reported last year that the British Museum had engaged in talks with Greece over the fate of the Parthenon sculptures. The Elgin Marbles, as they are known in the UK, are perhaps the most famous of the contested colonial artefacts in the museum’s collection. The Parthenon, ancient Athens’ most important temple, sat atop the Acropolis and was decorated with marble statues and a sculpted frieze depicting heroes and gods at a festival in honour of the goddess Athena.</p>

<p>The exact circumstances surrounding permission in 1801 for British ambassador Thomas Bruce, the Earl of Elgin, to remove “some pieces of stone with old inscriptions and figures”, as he put it, have been debated ever since. At a UK parliamentary committee convened in 1816 to investigate the possible purchase of the marbles from Lord Elgin and assess their worth, British sculptor John Flaxman called them “the finest works of art … [and] the most excellent of their kind that I have ever seen”.</p>

<p>Cultural commentators are divided on the issue of important national symbols – as the Parthenon Marbles are to the Greeks – residing in institutions that belong to another country. Many believe there is a strong moral argument for the repatriation of cultural treasures acquired during colonial times. Indeed, in a poll last year, the majority of the British public supported the marbles’ return to Greece in a cultural partnership.</p>

<p>British sociologist Tiffany Jenkins, author of the book Keeping their Marbles, believes the Elgin Marbles perform a valuable service by sitting in the British Museum, where a reported 75% of visitors are from overseas. When viewed there, in context with galleries showing artefacts from the Roman Empire, for instance, it is possible to see the influence the Parthenon had on other cultures.</p>

<p>The Greek government has sought the return of the marbles from Britain for more than 40 years. The remaining Parthenon sculptures reside in a state-of-the-art museum next to the Acropolis, where a place has been reserved for those removed by Elgin. It is thought the Greeks wanted to strike an agreement that would mean masterpieces like the mask of Agamemnon could be shown in the UK for the first time.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Regalia return</h3>



<p>The British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&amp;A) announced details in January of a long-term loan agreement whereby gold and silver regalia from the ancient Asante royal court will be displayed at the Manhyia Palace Museum in Kumasi, Ghana. These artefacts are of cultural, historical and spiritual significance to the Asante people and the announcement was greeted with joy by Ghanaians; many of the objects will be seen in the country for the first time in 150 years. The collaboration follows an official visit to London by the Asantehene (King of Asante) Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in May last year.</p>

<p>“We are delighted to be lending these beautiful and significant cultural objects for display in Kumasi in this the Asantehene’s Silver Jubilee year and the 150th anniversary of the Anglo-Ashanti war, and to be doing so through a collaboration with Manhyia Palace Museum and the V&amp;A,” said Lissant Bolton, Keeper of Africa, Oceania and the Americas at the British Museum.</p>

<p>Items from the British Museum collection include those looted during a later conflict, in 1895-1896, as well as gifts to the museum presented during trade negotiations in the early 19th century. Among them are the Mpomponsuo sword of state and a small gold ornament in the form of a lute-harp (sankuo).</p>

<p>For its part, the V&amp;A is lending 17 objects, including all 13 pieces of Asante royal regalia it acquired at a Garrard auction in 1874. Standouts are a gold peace pipe and three gold soul-washers’ badges (akrafokonmu) that were worn around the necks of court officials responsible for cleansing the king’s soul.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Moot loot</h3>



<p>A report commissioned by French President Emmanuel Macron in 2018 called for thousands of African artworks in French museums taken without consent during the colonial period to be returned to the continent. France duly gave back 26 objects to Benin from a collection known as the Abomey Treasures that were looted by French forces in 1892 – including statues, portable altars, palace doors and a throne. The gesture was part of French moves to improve its image in Africa and allow Africans access to their heritage.</p>

<p>Belgium is also making strides to repatriate many items taken during its colonial occupation of the Congo. King Philippe recently handed over a magnificent large wooden mask to Félix Tshisekedi, President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Other items are set to follow.</p>

<p>Now scattered in museums in the UK, the US, Germany and elsewhere, the Benin Bronzes are another collection of artefacts whose repatriation in some form have been urged. These superb royal and personal objects crafted from the 16th century onwards at the behest of the court of the Oba (king) in Benin City (in modern-day Nigeria) include elaborately decorated cast plaques, commemorative heads, and animal and human figures.</p>

<p>The 1860 plunder of Yuanmingyuan (the Old Summer Palace) in Beijing left a treasure trove of Chinese art and artefacts in British hands. Years later many were sold at auction houses and found their way into museums. Unesco has estimated that about 1.6 million Chinese relics are in the possession of 47 museums worldwide, including about 1 million looted from Yuanmingyuan. Chinese antiquarians believe more than 10 times that number are in the hands of private collectors. Some of these precious heritage objects are now being bought by wealthy Chinese and returning to China. The fate of the remainder is open to speculation.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">India pride</h3>



<p>India has been hankering since independence in 1947 for the return of the Koh-i-Noor diamond acquired by Britain during colonial times from the 10-year-old Maharajah of Punjab. Following its arrival in Britain, the Koh-i-Noor was eventually cut by Dutch master craftsmen in perfect symmetry with 33 facets on top and the same number underneath. Widely lauded for its dazzling beauty, the diamond was set in successive royal crowns, most lately that of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Pakistan has also laid claim to the jewel.</p>

<p>One interesting development, which organisers are hoping will provide a new model for sharing art across borders, is an exhibition at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya in Mumbai, India of items on long-term loan from the British Museum, the Berlin State Museums and J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. On display until 1 October 2024, Ancient Sculptures: India, Egypt, Assyria, Greece, Rome brings great works of antiquity from Western museums to an Indian audience and helps shed light on the interconnectivity between religions and cultures since ancient times.</p>

<p>“We see the exhibition as a unique and important educational endeavour that provides our Indian audiences and children with new ways of viewing their own culture as a result of seeing it in relation to other societies and geographies,” said Sabyasachi Mukherjee, director general of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, Mumbai, also noting that a high percentage of India’s young people might never have the opportunity to travel and experience the art and culture of other parts of the world.</p>


Lost Property: Disputed colonial-era treasures long held by museums in the West begin the journey home


<p>Selling the world’s most valuable life insurance policy earlier this year was undoubtedly a major coup for Hong Kong. Paying an astronomical US$250 million to the beneficiary upon the holder’s death, it was issued by HSBC Life to an ultra-high-net-worth individual (UHNW) whose identity understandably has not been disclosed. The cover surpassed the previous Guinness World Record for life insurance, a US$201 million policy to a US billionaire facilitated by advisory firm SG, LLC in 2014.  </p>

<p>The 10-year wait to break the world record is relatively short, considering the previous interval spanned almost a quarter of a century – it was back in 1990 that British life insurance agent Peter Rosengard sold a US$100 million policy to a prominent figure in the US entertainment industry. </p>

<p>To the surprise of many industry insiders, this latest record-smashing policy is fully underwritten by HSBC Life. But what is certain is that it represents a huge vote of confidence in Hong Kong’s financial services industry, and particularly the insurance sector. </p>

<p>The attention-grabbing sale in question was an HSBC Life Paramount Global Life Insurance Plan, a type of life insurance that offers whole-of-life protection with wealth preservation and legacy planning features. According to HSBC Life, the demand for such policies among UHNW individuals has ballooned over the past year, with a further 10 valued at US$50 million or above issued by the insurance firm to clients seeking facilities for wealth transfer and legacy planning.&nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">High penetration</h3>



<p>Hong Kong has been a major player in the world of insurance since the early 20th century, a feat commonly attributed to its relatively stable sociopolitical environment, advanced finance infrastructure, and open-door policy to foreign investment. Given its strong, high-income per capita economy, there is a high life insurance penetration in the territory. Insurance companies eye further expansion via a proliferation of new policies and the city’s rapid growth as an Asian hub, particularly its close ties with mainland China.  </p>

<p>“Asia is home to one of the fastest-growing UHNW populations in the world, and as such we are seeing a substantial increase in demand for insurance solutions to address business succession, estate management and legacy planning needs,” says Edward Moncreiffe, CEO of HSBC Life Hong Kong and Macau. He stresses that the issuance of these high-value life insurance policies proves that Hong Kong has reaffirmed its position as both a preferred destination for wealth management and a leading international insurance hub. </p>

<p>“The Hong Kong life insurance market has a number of characteristics that puts us in a strong position to capture this growth in regional UHNW wealth-transfer demand,” he says, citing Hong Kong’s deep talent pools across intermediaries, underwriters and actuaries, strong competition among international banks, brokers and insurers, well-capitalised insurance companies with strong credit ratings, and sound regulatory regime as contributing factors to the thriving insurance services. &nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Massive sector</h3>



<p>According to recent research by GlobalData, a UK-headquartered data analytics and consultancy company, the Hong Kong life insurance market was worth HK$478.2 billion (US$61.1 billion) in 2023 and is expected to grow by more than 3% per annum from 2024 to 2028. </p>

<p>The high level of financial literacy and digitalisation has spawned a diverse range of products in Hong Kong. Major developments have included the growth of finance technology such as insurtech and Environment Social and Governance (ESG) related products, as well as inclusive insurance products aimed at the excluded or underserved market.    </p>

<p>The industry’s leading line of business in Hong Kong last year was whole life insurance. Demand in this area is driven by an ageing society, increased life expectancy and a falling fertility rate. It is also buoyed by inclusivity elements to reflect these societal changes, such as whole-life protection for senior citizens and expanding the package of death and dementia-related benefits. &nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Mainland surge</h3>



<p>Many Hong Kong-based life insurance companies have experienced a surge in interest and sales since the reopening of the border with mainland China in early 2023. Prudential, one of the top three life insurers in Hong Kong, has cited border flow from the north as a major contributor to the vast boost in sales last year. Its annual report stated that mainland customers were looking for “diversification of currency and asset class, professional financial advice across a broad product spectrum, and access to high-quality medical care available in Hong Kong”.</p>

<p>The border reopening came not a moment too soon for Ryan Lam Leong Sing, a Licensed Individual Agent of an insurance company with nearly 15 years of experience. He shares that about 80% of his life insurance business emanates from mainland buyers, adding that sales have rocketed by 30% and the pent-up demand from mainland Chinese eager for Hong Kong life insurance policies is huge. “It’s not difficult – the demand is there,” notes Lam of the influx of mainland buyers, pointing out that they need to be physically present in Hong Kong to sign the policy.  </p>

<p>Mainland Chinese are attracted to Hong Kong to buy life insurance policies for a plethora of reasons, including its status as a leading financial centre and its legal system. More specifically, they are limited to US$50,000 per year in currency exchange and transfer out of China “If their money is in Hong Kong, they can exchange whatever they want and transfer it to any country,” says Lam.&nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Vehicle for growth</h3>



<p>Due to Hong Kong’s highly developed financial services sector, life insurance policies here can offer mainland customers a far better vehicle for the growth of financial assets. “The growth of their money is what they are seeking,” affirms Lam. “They maybe want to put it in a trust, and life insurance is an important part in the trust.” </p>

<p>Their life insurance policies fall into three categories: risk management, such as life, accident and medical insurance, and critical illness; savings management, such as savings plans for retirement and educational funds; and investment plans, offering customers a passive income and a fund manager to monitor their money. &nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Hong Kong attraction</h3>



<p>According to Lam, Hong Kong policies have an advantage over those offered on the mainland for paying dividends on the likes of critical illness cover. “In Hong Kong, after 30 years, even if you don’t become ill, you still get money paid out. On the mainland, there is no dividend at all,” he says.</p>

<p>“Then, for some savings plans, like an educational fund or retirement planning, the yearly return is under 3% on the mainland. But in Hong Kong, you can get like a maximum of 6-7%.” </p>

<p>This is important, stresses Lam, as the key component of these types of policies is maximising return for educational or retirement provision, while the insurance part acts purely as the foundation of the plan. </p>

<p>Lam adds that higher operating costs and taxes on the mainland are factors in limiting the level of return there. “Also, in Hong Kong, premiums are reinvested, and they can be put in any market around the world. In China, it is limited to the mainland market.”</p>

<p>The Covid years were difficult for life insurers in Hong Kong as business dropped by as much as 70%. Confidence in the Hong Kong insurance sector hinges on three factors, says Lam – “trust, ability and integrity” – and it appears this is now paying off. While it is not every day that a new policy smashes a world record, the industry has rebounded and sales are soaring.&nbsp; &nbsp;</p>
