<p>Chan’s philosophy shines through every dish. “Innovation is vital,” he expounds. “Celebrate heritage but be passionate about creating something new.” His journey began in dried seafood shops with his father, and over the years, he’s mastered the art of balancing the old with the new.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Ageless Bronze</h3>



<p>When the imposing Figure Décorative bronze by Henri Matisse achieved US$16.7 million (HK$130.5) at auction, the result resonated far beyond the Sotheby’s New York sale room. It was not only a record-setting transaction – the second highest ever for a Matisse bronze sculpture – nor just a reaffirmation of the French visual artist’s stature. Instead, the moment marked a profound shift in how collectors are reassessing sculpture’s physicality and permanence in an era dominated by the intangible.</p>

<p>Matisse is best known as a painter of radiant colour and lyrical line, yet his sculptural practice was never secondary. For him, bronze was a medium where form could be stripped of excess and the beauty of the human body celebrated. Figure Décorative, conceived in Paris in 1908 and cast in 1950, embodied this ethos. Its curved contours, balanced volumes and strident but serene gaze personify a fusion of modernist innovation and classical idealism. Matisse’s sculptures are now understood as foundational to his thinking about form and balance. They reveal the discipline behind the freedom, and the structure beneath the colour.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Emerald Geometry</h3>



<p>For a Cartier Art Deco emerald and diamond bracelet to command as much as £1.1 million (HK$11.7 million) at auction in London was not a surprise for connoisseurs but a confirmation. Christie’s spectacular sale of this treasure from the Wimbourne family collection reaffirmed what has long been understood: that the marriage of Cartier craftsmanship, Art Deco design and exceptional emeralds occupies one of the most enduring positions in the luxury market.</p>

<p>Created circa 1925, the bracelet exemplifies the aesthetic confidence of the Art Deco era, a period when Cartier redefined jewellery design through geometry, symmetry and a cosmopolitan vision. Set in platinum, it features 17 Colombian emeralds in pear, square, rectangular and hexagonal cuts interspersed with old‑cut and baguette diamonds arranged in crisp architectural harmony. The bracelet nearly tripled its pre-sale valuation. The result reflects a renewed appreciation for jewels as cultural artefacts, not merely ornaments. Once considered a secondary collecting category to fine art, jewellery is now understood as portable heritage – collectibles that carry artistry, rarity and narrative in equal measure.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Lovely Bones</h3>



<p>The auction of a juvenile Triceratops skeleton for a mighty US$5.4 million (HK$42 million) marks a defining moment in the evolving relationship between science, art, cultural spectacle and high-end collecting. In Phillips’ first foray into the prehistoric natural world, the beautifully preserved dinosaur – joined by several other precious fossils – guest-starred at a prestigious New York evening sale of Modern and Contemporary Art. It went for more than double its low-end estimate, underscoring the notion that collectors at the top of the market are no longer constrained by traditional categories.</p>

<p>This two- to six-year-old Triceratops possesses a distinct emotional resonance. Smaller in scale at about 4.4 metres (14.4 feet) long, and lighter in structure, it evokes fragility rather than dominance, telling a quieter story of growth interrupted, of a life some 66 million years ago suspended in transition.</p>



<p>Unearthed a decade ago in the Badlands of South Dakota and mounted to museum standard, the skeleton boasts an impressive original-bone count of more than 70%. It’s an amount that makes this prized preservation the most complete juvenile Triceratops around – and one that will probably never be surpassed.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Instrumental Panel</h3>



<p>Francis Bacon’s art has long occupied a singular position in modern canon – raw yet controlled, violent yet precise. In a market increasingly drawn to works that challenge as much as they reward, the most recent auction appearance of his unsettling 1967 diptych, Study for Head of Isabel Rawsthorne and George Dyer – which sold for a hefty US$16 million (HK$125 million) at Phillips New York – affirms the enduring authority of Bacon’s work and the unique emotional force of the diptych.</p>

<p>Painted in 1967, it is the first of only 10 diptychs by Bacon, and one of only two that pair the muses who were central to a defining decade in his life – close female friend Rawsthorne, and Dyer, his lover. The Irish-born British figurative painter turned to the diptych not as a narrative device but as a psychological one. Amplifying his lifelong obsession with fragmentation, two panels placed side by side create tension rather than resolution.</p>



<p>Bacon’s themes of power, vulnerability and isolation are timeless, but they also feel acutely contemporary. In a world marked by instability and psychological strain, his visual language feels less historical than prophetic.</p>

<p>New Year, new hopes, and a little luck in design. We meet furniture showroom director and home lifestyle curator Tony Luk a week before the Lunar New Year. The festive season has long been associated with the tradition of buying something new – clothing, homeware, furniture – to usher in luck and prosperity. Yet, Luk admits that the practice has evolved over the years. “It’s been tough for us, but it’s gaining some traction now,” he says with a hopeful smile. “I hope business continues to only go up from here.”</p>

<p>Despite current challenges, Luk remains optimistic about the future, confident that momentum will grow. His resilience mirrors the very essence of the design world, constant evolution and renewal, just like the art and architecture he so passionately champions.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Drawn to Creativity</h3>



<p>Luk’s adventure in the world of design started long before he debuted his prestigious interiors spaces, Louvre Galley and Andante, at the Design Showcase in Ruttonjee Centre, Central. During his childhood in Hong Kong, he was captivated by drawing, a talent that sprouted from an innate curiosity. “In primary school, I enjoyed sketching, but it was more about exploring my inner self,” he recalls. It wasn’t until secondary school that his passion deepened.</p>

<p>Joining the school Art Club in his first year, he discovered a love for capturing images, particularly through film photography. “Photography inspired me to pay attention to details, geometry, colour, and how light and shade interplay,” he explains. These foundational elements would later become the building blocks of his design philosophy – an eye for precision, harmony and aesthetic subtlety, rooted in his early artistic explorations.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Building Foundations</h3>



<p>Luk’s initial ambition was to become an architect, a dream sparked by his fascination with cityscapes and buildings. “Photography probably played a role here, too,” he notes. “I was mesmerised by the imposing structures around the city; how they ‘spoke’ to each other and to the people.” He headed to the UK to study the subject.</p>

<p>To him, architecture is a form of art – large-scale, impactful and intimately connected to society. It is a dialogue between form and function, beauty and utility. His experience working on the design of the new Hong Kong International Airport in the 1990s further expanded this perspective. “Being involved from the very beginning was a huge catalyst,” says Luk, who returned to Hong Kong&nbsp; to join the project. “It helped me understand how architecture can be both grand and human, technical yet poetic.”</p>

<p>Working alongside global experts in aviation design, he gained insights into how public architecture balances aesthetics with practicality. This experience laid the groundwork for his later pursuit of interior and lifestyle design – fields where he could bring art closer to people’s everyday lives.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">High-flying Interiors</h3>



<p>Post-Chek Lap Kok, Luk faced a pivotal decision: continue with large-scale projects or focus on something more personal? “I wanted to get ‘closer’ to the end-users,” he says of his shift towards intimate design. “Interior-design projects tend to be shorter in cycle and more directly impact people’s daily lives.”</p>

<p>He began working with European furniture brands, notably Italian design company Minotti, which caught his eye for its blend of contemporary elegance and craftsmanship. He became the firm’s exclusive authorised dealer in Hong Kong and Macau, and Andante was born in 2004. A curated space where modern design meets sophisticated lifestyle, the flagship showroom spans two floors and 600 square metres. This inviting sanctuary is filled with carefully selected collections that embody Luk’s core philosophy of supreme quality, subtle style and timeless sophistication.</p>

<p>Located next door to Louvre Gallery, which was established in 1997, Andante has become a beacon of contemporary Italian and European design spanning furniture, lighting, home accessories and glass art. Beyond Minotti, it showcases names such as Venini, Bomma, Kose, SkLO, Tato, Nahoor, Venicem, Lumen Center, Purho, An&amp;angel and Darmes.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Reflection of the Times</h3>



<p>To Luk, “contemporary design” is more than just a style; it’s a reflection of the era. “It’s a time reference,” he explains. “Every period has its own contemporary expression. What was once ‘contemporary’ might eventually become ‘classical’ or ‘vintage’.” He believes that modern lifestyles – individualistic, flexible and urban – shape the evolution of design. “Contemporary design must mirror these lifestyles,” he says. “It should offer clean lines, quieter luxury, modest details and adaptability.”</p>

<p>He emphasises that art plays a vital role in interior spaces. “Historically, art was often an afterthought, something to ‘decorate’ walls at the end,” he notes. However, during the Covid pandemic, Luk rethought this approach. “Art should be integrated from the very beginning of the design process,” he declares. “In our Art Andante initiative, we now showcase how art can lead and inspire interior design, creating a complete ambience that is both aesthetic and emotional.”</p>

<p>“During Covid, I realised that art could even lead the design concept,” he says. “Now, we aim for a 360-degree experience, where art is conceived alongside furniture and lighting, not just appended at the end.” This innovative approach has garnered appreciation from clients who seek spaces that are not only stylish but deeply meaningful, spaces that tell stories and evoke emotions.</p>

SPARK LOVE AND SPARKLE: Dive Into the Glittering World of Engagement Rings with L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts


<p>For a 22-year-old English actor with just a short decade in the business, Bella Ramsey has accrued a long list of credits to, and column inches about, their name. They entered the industry without connections or insider advantages, so when early success arrived, it felt unexpected rather than inevitable. This experience fostered virtues of resilience and humility that would remain visible as their career rapidly expanded.</p>

<p>The spotlight arrived for Ramsey with great intensity when, as a tiny 11-year-old, they were cast as Lyanna Mormont in the sixth season of HBO’s Game of Thrones. In their first professional screen role, they stepped onto one of the most visible television productions in the world. Their character, the fierce child-leader Lyanna Mormont, appeared in only a handful of episodes, yet Ramsey’s performance left an outsized impression. Their calm authority, direct delivery and unwavering presence commanded attention.</p>

<p>For a young actor, such rapid recognition could have been destabilising. Ramsey, however, remained grounded, staying closely connected to the ‘normalcy’ of family life in Leicestershire, away from the glare of London – indeed, it was only last year that the actor moved into their own home in the capital city.</p>

<p>As Lyanna, young Bella shared scenes with Kit Harington (playing Jon Snow), another novice actor who catapulted to fame in the fantasy drama series. Reminiscing with Harington last year, they confessed: “I weirdly wasn’t nervous at all [on set], because I never knew that I wanted to be an actor, so I didn’t have a bunch of expectations. I was coming into it very much blind.”</p>

<p>Certainly, acting entered Ramsey’s life quietly rather than dramatically. After joining a local drama club primarily as a way to socialise, they attended the Television Workshop in Nottingham, known for emphasising realism in screen performance. This approach proved formative, shaping an acting style grounded in restraint and authenticity.</p>

<p>Adolescence unfolded under public attention, bringing challenges that extended beyond the usual uncertainties of growing up. Ramsey has spoken openly about experiencing anxiety and emotional strain during their teenage years. <p>Following Game of Thrones, Ramsey chose projects that allowed exploration without overwhelming exposure. One such role was voicing the title character in Netflix’s animated series Hilda. Through voice acting, Ramsey expanded their range, demonstrating warmth, curiosity and emotional nuance.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Wellbeing First</h3>



<p>They also took on a main role in the BBC series The Worst Witch (2017-2020), yet the demands of production eventually conflicted with personal well-being. After the third season, Ramsey made the decision to step away, citing mental-health reasons and signalling a commitment to self-care.</p>

<p>At 18, Ramsey was diagnosed as neurodivergent, a realisation that helped contextualise earlier experiences around sensitivity, emotional processing and overstimulation. The teenager called the diagnosis “freeing”, explaining “[it] enables me to walk through the world with more grace towards myself about not being able to do the easy everyday tasks that everyone else seems to be able to do”.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Expectations as Ellie</h3>



<p>This proved essential when Ramsey was cast as strong-willed apocalypse survivor Ellie in HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us. Announced in 2021 and released in 2023, the project carried enormous expectations. Ellie was already a beloved character from a successful video game franchise, and fan scrutiny was intense.</p>

<p>Rather than attempting to replicate the game’s version of Ellie, Ramsey approached the role as a dramatic character study, prioritising emotional progression. The resulting performance was widely praised for its depth and honesty. Ramsey portrayed Ellie as fierce, wounded, humorous and vulnerable, grounding the character in emotional truth.</p>

<p>“I was so terrified of signing on to The Last of Us and the idea of reaching a level of fame that doesn’t go away,” the actor revealed to Harington. “But I realise now that actually, you reach this level of fame that stays for a few months while the show’s coming out… If you don’t do anything to maintain that level of fame, the world moves on, which I’m so grateful for.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Casting off the Child</h3>



<p>The success of The Last of Us transformed Ramsey’s career. The TV series became a cultural phenomenon, and Ramsey received major award nominations and critical acclaim. More significantly, the role established them as a leading dramatic actor capable of anchoring prestige television. It marked a clear transition from child performer to adult artist.</p>

<p>“It was simultaneously the most challenging thing I’ve done so far, and also incredibly rewarding,” Ramsey said in an interview last year. “Seeing how much it means to so many people, and being able to look back now and reflect and see all the ways that I grew as a person, I am very grateful for it.”</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Label Disquiet</h3>



<p>It was during the 2023 media blitz before The Last of Us debuted that Ramsey came out as non-binary. They commented at the time: “I’m very much just a person. Being gendered isn’t something that I particularly like, but in terms of pronouns, I really couldn&#8217;t care less.”</p>

<p>More recently, Ramsey has wondered whether publicly revealing their gender fluidity was wise, as it pigeonholes them: “The label of being autistic … helped me to understand myself, but gender and sexuality-wise, labels do not feel comfy for me in any capacity, because I feel like I’m putting myself into a box. I feel trapped.”</p>

<p>They added, “It does make me a bit sad that people who aren’t in the public eye can explore their gender identity or sexuality in private. That’s a privilege I don’t really get any more.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Out of the Ordinary</h3>



<p>Ramsey has resisted constructing a conventional celebrity persona. Interviews are approached thoughtfully, often centred on mental health and creative process. On the decision to deactivate some of their social-media accounts last year, they said: “I’ve reached a point where I don’t actually need this anymore. It wasn’t even this big, dramatic thing. I just got so sick of it, and it was detrimental more than helpful.”</p>

<p>Rooted in craft, boundaries and quiet confidence, Ramsey represents an alternative model of celebrity. They are part of a generation redefining success, valuing emotional intelligence and integrity alongside ambition. Ramsey’s openness around mental health, neurodivergence and self-protection resonates with audiences rarely offered such honesty. They have also advocated for Greenpeace, the Palestinian cause and the trans, non-binary and intersex communities.</p>

<p>Looking forward, Ramsey remains committed to doing compelling work across film, television and voice projects while remaining selective. This year, as well as filming the third season of The Last of Us, they are starring in the coming-of-age comedy Sunny Dancer; headlining the UK television thriller series, Maya, as a teenager in witness protection hunted by hitmen; and lending their voice to The Sheep Detectives.</p>

I long to play someone who’s a Hannibal Lecter type.”</p>


Bella for All: A champion of alternative celebrity, Bella Ramsey aims to bring out the best of us


<p>New York has always been more than a city. It is a state of mind, a pulse that beats through music, theatre and art with unmistakable force. That creative legacy is equally apparent in the architectural masterpieces that shape its skyline. One of New York’s most distinctive modern addresses, the residential tower at 53 West 53rd Street rises quite literally above the cultural heartbeat of the city – it peers over the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) – in one of Manhattan’s most prestigious and style‑forward neighbourhoods.</p>

<p>The edifice, known simply as 53W53, has permanently reshaped the Midtown skyline, asserting itself as both an architectural statement and a destination in its own right. Upon its completion in 2019, it made the top 10 of the tallest buildings in the city (dropping to 12th tallest by the start of this year). It measures 320 metres (1,050 feet) from the lobby to the tip of its tallest spire and comprises 77 storeys – though due to quirks of the internal numbering system, the top level of apartments occupies the 87th floor.</p>

<p>The majestic tower is the work of celebrated French architect Jean Nouvel. Its exterior is defined by a dramatic diagrid structure, a lattice of intersecting diagonal lines that gives the building a sculptural, almost kinetic presence. From certain angles, it appears to taper and twist as it rises, like an abstract artwork rendered in steel and glass. It is a fitting visual language for a building that houses three floors of museum gallery space, blurring the boundaries between art, architecture and daily life. The tower’s striking silhouette invites curiosity, drawing the eye upward and hinting at the world of refinement contained within.</p>

A recipient of the Pritzker Architectural Prize, his body of work spans continents and typologies, from museums and concert halls to luxury residences and major cultural institutions. Projects such as the Fondation Cartier in Paris (1994) and Louvre Abu Dhabi (2017) demonstrate his ability to merge intellectual rigour with emotional impact. At 53W53, that philosophy translates into a building that feels both daring and deeply appropriate for New York: bold, vertical and unapologetically modern.</p>

<p>The 53W53 interiors are the work of Thierry Despont, the late French-born, New York-resident architect, designer and artist whose understated approach to luxury earned him an international following. His client list reads like a ‘who’s who’ of fashionable society and captains of industry, including Bill Gates, Leslie Wexner, Calvin Klein and Oscar de la Renta. He designed Harry Winston’s flagship store in Beverly Hills and parts of the Ritz in Paris and London’s Dorchester Hotel. His residential work is characterised by precision, restraint and a deep respect for materials – qualities that are evident throughout the luxury apartments at this prestigious address.</p>
